The Devils Club is a film directed by Hugh Wilson and directed in 1996 in the USA . It is based on Olivia Goldsmith 's bestseller of the same name , in which three wives take revenge on their husbands for abandoning them for younger women.
action
In college , Brenda, Elise, Annie, and Cynthia were best friends. Over the years they have lost sight of each other and don't meet again until 25 years later - at the funeral of Cynthia, who committed suicide in New York after her divorce from a financial tycoon .
As they tell each other how their lives have been since college, they discover that they have one thing in common: they have all been exchanged for and betrayed with younger women by their husbands who have made careers thanks to their help.
Thanks to the support of his wife, Brenda's husband Morty was able to build a chain of thriving electronics stores and became a millionaire . In addition to the self-sacrificing work in her husband's business, Brenda also raised their son Jason - but Morty simply dropped her after around 20 years of marriage and turned to a younger and slimmer woman, the cashier Shelley. While Brenda is increasingly struggling with money problems, Morty throws the money for Shelley with both hands out the window.
Elise's husband Bill benefited from her reputation as an actress and became a well-known Hollywood producer. When it comes to the casting of his latest film, it turns out that he has a much younger girlfriend who is supposed to play the lead role, while Elise is supposed to come to terms with the role of her mother. In addition, her husband wants to divorce her and wants to assert high maintenance claims through his lawyer. So Elise should z. B. sell all gifts to her husband and transfer half of the proceeds to Bill.
Annie's husband, Aaron, set up an advertising agency while raising their daughter, Chris, who claims to be a lesbian. For some time, Aaron has also had a relationship with the therapist Leslie Rosen, whom he consulted with Annie for a long time, and is therefore demanding a divorce. With this step he completely destroys Annie's wishful thinking about the only functioning relationship between all four friends.
According to the motto "revenge is sweet", the three women plan to ruin their husbands socially and financially, which is not too difficult because each of the men has a mess. They are supported by a grande dame of high society, a crazy interior designer, Annie's mother and daughter and Brenda's uncle Carmine, who has ties to the Mafia . After the girlfriends quarrel because they can't get ahead with Morty and Aaron at first, they realize that revenge is not enough and Elise has to get her drinking problem under control. In the end, all three husbands have to pay heavily to finance the project of a counseling center for women, which the friends started in memory of Cynthia. Brenda and Morty make a fresh start, while Elise and Annie send their unfaithful husbands into the desert. At the same time, Elise gives her career a boost by celebrating success on stage and finally being honest about her age.
Reviews
“The three mature Hollywood stars fluctuate credibly between depression, hatred, optimism and exuberance. In the US, the intelligent comedy was one of the box office hits of the season. "
"Caricaturing marriage comedy and revenge comedy that lives from the unleashed play of its leading actresses, but remains superficial and striking in the character drawing and neither finds a rhythm nor a coherent form in terms of form."
“The only thing that is convincing in 'The Devil's Club' is the acting. However, this alone is not enough to make a good film. Even if it is really funny in places, the script is probably just an infusion of old slapstick ideas in a new film. "
