Katherine "Kate" Burton (born September 10, 1957 in Geneva , Switzerland ) is an American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Kate Burton's parents, Richard Burton and Sybil Williams , were actors. Burton studied at the School of Drama of Yale University , they also included a study of Russian language and European history at Brown University from.

Burton made his debut opposite her father in the 1969 historical drama Queen for a Thousand Days , but was not featured in the credits. In the action comedy Big Trouble in Little China (1986) she played one of the bigger roles alongside Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall . Her appearance on the television series Junge Schicksale (ABC Afterschool Specials) in 1995 earned her the Daytime Emmy Award in 1996 .

As a theater actress, Burton was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2002 for her roles in Hedda Gabler and The Elephant Man . In the television thriller Obsessed (2002) she took on one of the leading roles alongside Jenna Elfman . In the drama Empire Falls (2005) she played the role of the daughter of the boss of Miles Roby ( Ed Harris ), who is in love with them for years. In the thriller Stay (2005) she appeared in a larger role alongside Ewan McGregor , Ryan Gosling and Naomi Watts . Her role as Ellis Gray in the television series Grey's Anatomy , which has played since 2005, brought her an Emmy nomination in 2006 and 2007 . In the series Scandal she played from 2012 to 2018 - also, like Grey's Anatomy, by Shonda Rhimes - the role of Sally Langston , for which she was again nominated for an Emmy in 2014.

Burton has been married to Michael Ritchie, who directs the Massachusetts' Williamstown Theater Festival , since 1984 . She has two children.
