action

Sherlock Holmes is a former advisor to Scotland Yard . Because of a prolonged heroin addiction , triggered by the death of his ex-girlfriend Irene Adler , he was admitted to a rehab clinic in New York City . After his discharge, the former surgeon Dr. Joan Watson aside. She was hired by Holmes' father to make sure Sherlock didn't relapse. To keep an eye on Holmes, she moves into his guest room. As long as Holmes can concentrate on unsolved murders, he has no tendency to relapse into drug addiction. Holmes spends his time as an unpaid advisor to the NYPD . There he works regularly with Captain Thomas Gregson, whom he already knows from Scotland Yard, where Gregson sat in after "9/11" . But not only the police, but also private individuals - if the case is tricky enough - Sherlock offers his extraordinary cognitive and combinatorial skills.

Initially, Holmes and Watson's relationship was marked by a lack of trust and misunderstandings. Holmes feels disturbed by Watson's presence in his life, and Watson believes that Holmes could relapse at any time. Over time, however, this mistrust is increasingly diminished, also because, in addition to regular drug tests by Watson, Holmes always carries out or offers voluntary tests in case of doubt. A friendship slowly develops, which leads to the fact that both develop a certain interest in the private life of the other. So Holmes tries to find out why Watson quit her job as a surgeon, and Watson tries to find out what drove Holmes into his heroin addiction.

In the course of time, especially after the end of addiction care, Watson develops a real interest in helping to solve criminal cases, while Holmes adjusts more and more to Watson as a conversation partner who helps him to organize his thoughts better. Eventually she lets him train her in his methods and gradually becomes his equal partner.

characters

main characters

Sherlock Holmes

A former advisor to Scotland Yard who now lives in New York City after completing drug rehabilitation for addiction problems in the UK. Holmes is a deductive genius with a variety of unusual interests and hobbies to aid him in his investigations. Since he has the feeling that the most interesting criminal cases are in America, he stays in New York. He contacts an old employee, Captain Thomas Gregson of the NYPD, to resume his previous work as a consulting detective. He is forced by his father to work with Dr. To live with Joan Watson, his “sober companion” who cares for him. Miller's Holmes reveals many canonical aspects of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character, while his family relationships, particularly his resentment towards his father, have been incorporated into his narrative. Between the second and third seasons, Sherlock spends eight months in the UK, working for MI-6. In “Enough Nemesis to Go Around” he returns to New York with a new protégé, Kitty Winter. At the end of season three, Holmes relapses, but his father's connections allow him to return to work for the NYPD. Season 4 reveals in the mid-season that his mother, May Holmes, was also addicted to opiates, like him. In the final episodes of season five, Holmes suffers from inexplicable headaches and poor concentration, and hallucinates a woman based on his mother; the sixth season premiere shows that he has post-concussion syndrome, which forces him to take a carefully balanced system of medication and engage in various mental activities to try to heal his brain, albeit hampered by Sherlocks “Necessity” to use one's work to escape one's previous dependencies.

Dr. Joan Watson (née Yun)

She is Holmes' personal addiction coach and a formerly successful surgeon. She was hired by Holmes' father to help his son stay abstinent after his release from rehabilitation. When her contract term ends, she tells Holmes that his father wants to keep her services. Increasingly, Holmes relies on and trusts Watson's contributions as she helps him arrange his life after the addiction. After a while, Holmes reveals that he has found out that she is no longer paid as a caregiver. He offers her an apprenticeship position and tells her how much she means to him and how it helps him focus. Watson accepts and begins her detective training with Holmes. After Sherlock returns to London, Joan becomes the Detective Consultant for the 11th Precinct, while also taking on more traditional private investigator- type cases , which Sherlock avoids. Even so, the two work together again when Holmes returns to New York, with Joan occasionally taking on independent cases from Holmes. Joan has a brother, Oren, and a half-sister, Lin Wen (née Yun). Joan and her sister have the same father but different mothers. She is temporarily in a relationship with Sherlook Home's older brother until he has to go into the witness protection program. In the course of the series, it also changes externally. In the first few seasons she always wears mini skirts or mini dresses, in the later episodes she often wears rather strict and sometimes more masculine-looking outfits such as trouser suits and ties.

Captain Thomas "Tommy" Gregson

The captain of the 11th ward of the New York City Police Department. He was previously employed by Scotland Yard to oversee the Counter Terrorism Bureau, where he met with Sherlock and was impressed with his work. He really likes Holmes, and the two of them respect one another, although he admits that Sherlock is a "pain in the ass". In season 2, Gregson is separated from his wife Cheryl, with whom he has been with for over twenty years. In season 3 they are divorced. In the episode "Rip Off" (Season 3, Episode 5, Eng. "Watson's book) it is revealed that one of his daughters, Hannah Gregson (Liza J. Bennett), is an ambitious police officer and how he wants to be a captain. Absconded "(Season 3, Episode 23, Eng." Bienensterben ") Gregson is promoted to Deputy Chief because of the good work of his unit, but despite the indications that some higher officials wanted to accept the offer, he decides to stay because he is his Values current role and ability to interact with people more than chance for promotion. This episode also mentions that he served as a newly promoted detective in the 14th district and was appointed head of Major Case Squad at the age of 40 In season four, Gregson is dating Paige Cowen, a former detective. She had to quit her job in the police department because she was keeping a part of seized bribes. When Paige suddenly breaks up with Gregson, she calls her as a reason not to jeopardize Gregson's career because of her wrongdoing. Joan doesn't believe her and confronts her. It turns out that Paige has multiple sclerosis. Joan persuades Paige to tell Gregson the truth. This gives the relationship another chance and finally the two get married. After it becomes clear at the end of season six that Hannah killed the serial killer who strangled her roommate, Gregson stands in front of his daughter and allows Sherlock (to protect Watson) to make a false confession. On Thomas Gregson's uniform there is the US flag as a pin (should be worn by every NYPD Police Officer) and the World Trade Center pin (the wearing police officer served in the 9/11 attacks) as well as the pin to commemorate the 170- anniversary of the NYPD (NYPD 170th Commemorative Breast Bar). He is a holder of the NYPD Medal of Honor and the NYPD Medal for Valor.

Detective First Grade Marcus Bell

A junior officer on the 11th station that Holmes and Watson often work with. Initially against the idea of getting help from Sherlock, he recognizes Sherlock's talent as a detective and is happy to take advice from him. He was briefly reassigned to an observer role in season two after suffering a potentially serious shoulder injury from a hostile witness Holmes previously interviewed, but a confrontation with Holmes helps Bell overcome the mental health issues that are hindering his recovery , and he's since returned to his old role. Holmes later ensures that Bell is recruited by the US marshals, as the investigation team around Captain Gregson will eventually disband and Bell's further career opportunities will be very poor at this point. He is a recipient of the NYPD Excellent Police Duty Award. He also wears the US flag on his uniform as a needle and the needle to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the NYPD (NYPD 170th Commemorative Breast Bar).

Morland Holmes

Sherlock's father who owns the house where Sherlock and Joan live. After Sherlock relapses, he comes to New York for an indefinite period. Much to the displeasure of Sherlock, who describes him as "repeatedly absent" and secretly accuses him of his lack of fatherly love. Morland Holmes is a billionaire entrepreneur and management consultant, seems to have countless contacts and can often make the seemingly impossible possible. Joan observes Morland's special eating habits and learns that he is suffering from severe stomach damage sustained in an attack on his life in Paris two years earlier. His lover Sabine was also killed in this attack. Morland wants to find Sabine's murderer, but Sherlock and Watson believe that the attack was against Morland and that his life is still in danger. They help him with the investigation and it turns out that the criminal network behind it, which was once run by Jamie Moriarty. With the help of some of the organization's sidesteppers, the current leader Joshua Vikner is killed and Morland is elected as the new leader. He intends to destroy the criminal group from within and in this way to protect his life, but above all Sherlock and Watson. He leaves New York to manage business from London. He doesn't appear in season five.

Shinwell Johnson

A former patient of Dr. Watson and a former convict and gang member of the SBK (South Bronx Killas). He and Watson meet again when he is released from prison and placed on parole. While on probation, Watson helps him fit back into his life outside of prison and develop a relationship with his daughter. He is briefly an informant for an FBI agent and later an official informant for the Bronx Gang Squad. His relationship with Sherlock and Joan wavers when Sherlock discovers that Shinwell was responsible for the death of a friend of his during his original time at SBK. Shinwell ends up writing a confession for the crime to bring down the gang, but he is killed by another member of the SBK. Watson and Holmes take this as an opportunity to fight the SBK themselves and ultimately to crush them.

Michael Rowan

A recovering addict who is impressed with Sherlock's methods of dealing with his addiction. As “fellow sufferers”, the two become something like friends and seem to support each other. Rowan also has a major health problem to deal with. He is later exposed as a murderer after burying a woman's body in an undisclosed location; eventually he is even exposed as a serial killer who killed an estimated dozen women in several states. He attributes these acts to Sherlock for having focused on his "work" (aka killing) to combat his heroin addiction.

Recurring characters

Kitty winter

Sherlock's newest protégé, whom he brings from London after leaving MI6. She is initially tasked with spying on Watson until she is discovered by her. Sherlock tends to be strict with her, but admires her detective skills. Kitty's real name is unknown as she was kidnapped and raped in London before meeting Sherlock and she had changed her name to forget him and her previous life. Her character is based on Kitty Winter in Doyle's "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client". After confronting and disfiguring her rapist, she decides to leave the United States to avoid possible arrest and go somewhere where she can use the skills Sherlock and Watson taught her. Because of an earlier case she returns to New York ("Wrong Side of the Road"), where it turns out that she is now the mother of a young son.

Alfredo Llamosa

Sherlock's self-help godfather, who is himself a recovering addict. Alfredo is a former car cracker, now he is paid by various car companies to test the security systems of their cars and he occasionally lets Sherlock try his own skills on the cars. Alfredo is one of Sherlock's few real friends, but he doesn't hesitate to criticize him and urges him to continue his rehab and sponsor himself. He also teaches Joan how to bypass a car's security lock. Holmes 'fires' Alfredo as his godfather so that he can help Alfredo as a friend. After season 4, he appears very rarely in the series.

Mycroft Holmes

Mycroft is Sherlock's older brother who still lives in London. He and Sherlock have had a very bitter relationship in the past - Sherlock had an affair with Mycroft's fiancé. After contracting leukemia, Mycroft takes steps to reconcile with his brother. During his efforts, he becomes a very good friend of Sherlock's partner, Joan Watson. The two start a relationship, which does not last long because problems with Sherlock arise. Mycroft owns a chain of restaurants called "Diogenes" and is an excellent chef himself. It is later revealed that Mycroft is in the service of MI6 and is investigating "Le Milieu". The brothers' relationship improves now that Sherlock learns that Mycroft is forced to work at MI6 because of a mistake made by Holmes during his drug history. Shortly thereafter, Mycroft staged his death by fire in "Diogenes" so that "Le Milieu" would not look for him. Sherlock and his father also suggest that they can contact Mycroft through secret channels (e.g. when Lin Wen shows up and claims to have had a relationship with Mycroft). In season 6, Sherlock learns that Mycroft died of a cerebral haemorrhage in New Zealand 10 months ago ("Nobody Lives Forever").

Irene Adler / Jamie Moriarty

As Irene, she is Sherlock's former lover, while in her true identity as Moriarty, she is a criminal mastermind who fakes Sherlock's own death in order to detract his investigation from her criminal activities. Her supposed death as Irene caused Sherlock's already established drug use to escalate. Although Sherlock reveals her true identity and is responsible for her subsequent imprisonment, the two continue to have conflicting feelings for each other - Holmes remarks in a conversation with Bell that "the love of his life is an unrepentant murderer." Both have great mutual respect for the other's spiritual powers. Irene has also gained a lot of respect for Joan, as the latter's ability to deceive her led to her arrest. When Joan's life is threatened by drug lord Elana March, she arranges the death of the criminal in her cell. At the end of the fourth season, Morland Holmes takes over her organization with the aim of dismantling it from the inside to prevent her resources from being used against his son and Joan. In season 6, Sherlock learns from his father that Moriaty had escaped her beachers by the FBI ("You've Come a Long Way, Baby") and that Morland now wants to have Morland killed to get their empire back. Morland negotiates a truce at Sherlock's instigation, who claims to one of Moriarty's subordinates that he is not interested in a truce and that he would kill his father.

Gareth Lestrade

Sherlock's British colleague and rival. When Sherlock was based in London, he worked with Lestrade, who was then a member of the Metropolitan Police. Lestrade has a reputation for solving cases that were actually solved by Sherlock. Lestrade is clearly out of Sherlock's league, but he's a skilled - if overzealous and impulsive - detective. After he was kicked out of Scotland Yard for downright pursuit of a murder suspect, even though the other investigators knew that the man did not kill his wife, he asked Holmes for help with the investigation. After the successful conclusion of the case, Holmes offers him temporary shelter until Lestrade has found something new. After some self-discovery problems, Lestrade takes a new job. In a later case it turns out that his new job as "Security Tsar" was to organize future bed stories for a very wealthy entrepreneur. In the course of the investigation, he quits.

Ms. Hudson

An expert in ancient Greek who essentially lives as a muse for various wealthy men and lets them bear her. Sherlock allows her to stay at the "Sandstone" (Sherlock's residence) after a breakup, and she then agrees to clean once a week as a source of income. Sherlock initially tries to get Joan to pay for the work when she complains about its messiness, but she refuses and they agree to share the cost. Ms. Hudson is only seen in individual episodes in each of the first three seasons (episodes 19, 45, 55), but is mentioned in numerous others up to the fourth season.

Fiona 'Mittens' Helbron

She is a brilliant software engineer for a technology company called Pentillion, also known as 'Mittens' in the hacking community. She is autistic and a big cat lover (hence her hacker nickname). She is briefly considered a suspect in one case (episode 81), but later supports Holmes and Watson in their investigations. She later asks Watson for help on another matter and begins a romantic relationship with Holmes (episodes 84 and 90). Sherlock later ended this relationship.

Dr. Eugene Hawes, ME

New York City Medical Examiner, who provides Sherlock and Watson with details of murders that intersect with their investigations. He and Sherlock are regular chess partners (“the first Thursday of the month” is mentioned in the episode “Hounded”). After he was almost killed when a bomb detonated in the morgue ("Down Where the Dead Delight"), he developed a drug addiction. Sherlock confronts him with it, so that he temporarily stops his work and wants to cure himself with his sister. In the fifth season ("Ill Tidings", dt. "Snake venom") he returns to his workplace cured.

title

The title "elementary" or in German "elementar" refers to the opinion expressed by Holmes in the book, what others find so fascinating about his conclusions, is based solely on elementary knowledge . Holmes uses the term in this form in eight places in the original narratives. The following statement by Holmes' "This is elementary" or "Elementar, my dear Watson" does not appear in the literal form in any of Conan Doyle's original stories. It was not until 1899 that Doyle wrote the play Sherlock Holmes: A Drama in Four Acts with William Gillette , in which the phrase "Oh, this is elementary, my dear fellow" appears for the first time. It became a legend when it was picked up by the actor Clive Brook in the first Holmes sound film in 1929, in the version "Oh, this is elementary, my dear Watson".

reception

criticism

“For Sherlock lovers, Elementary is by no means a substitute, not even suitable to bridge the gap until the third BBC season. For everyone else, the series makes average crime fiction to watch. But you don't have to. "

- Christian Junklewitz, serial junkies

“So that it doesn't get boring, they give the story new twists and ensure a prominent cast […], but the film is more confused than ingenious. [...] Otherwise this series differs little from any other American crime series. However, she cannot get close to 'Sherlock', and in terms of the intricacies of the cases, not even to 'CSI'. So it's a shame about the good name, because it doesn't deserve mediocrity. "
