Lucy Alexis Liu ( Chinese  劉玉玲 , Pinyin Liú Yùlíng ; born December 2, 1968 in Queens , New York City , New York ) is an American actress , voice actress and film director .

Life

Lucy Liu was born in Queens and grew up with her brother John Liu in Jackson Heights with their parents, Chinese immigrants from Taiwan , a biochemist and a civil engineer . Only Mandarin was spoken in her parents' home and she did not learn English until she was five. Her parents pushed her to study, which she later pursued. Liu previously attended Joseph Pulitzer Middle School and graduated from the prestigious Stuyvesant High School in 1986 . She then attended New York University for a year and then moved to the University of Michigan . There she completed her studies with a Bachelor of Science in Asian language and culture. Liu worked as a waitress while studying in Michigan .

Her hobbies include mountaineering , skiing and horse riding . She also enjoys playing the accordion .

She also works as a painter under the name Yu Ling. She had exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, London and Munich, among others.

In addition to English and Mandarin , Lucy Liu also speaks a little Italian , Spanish and Japanese .

She lives in New York with her brother and his wife. At the end of August 2015, with the help of a surrogate mother , she became the mother of a son.

Career

Liu's acting career began in 1989 when she auditioned for a role in the University of Michigan senior year production of Alice in Wonderland .

This career got professional character in 1991, where she was seen in an episode of the US television series Beverly Hills, 90210 as Courtney. This was followed by a supporting role in the Chinese production Ban wo zong heng in 1992. This was followed by supporting roles in television series such as LA Law - Star Lawyers, Tricks, Trials , where she was seen as Mai Lin. In the US comedy series Coach with Craig T. Nelson and Jerry Van Dyke in the lead roles, she got the role of a work colleague in one episode. She was seen as a viewer in 1995 in the series Listen, Who's Hammering . In the same year she got a role in the fantasy television series Hercules and in the drama Bang .

In the hospital series Emergency Room , Lucy Liu played the mother of a patient, Mei-Sun Loew in three episodes. In the episode Genesis of the action series Nash Bridges , she was seen at the side of Don Johnson . In the episode Hell Money of the science fiction series The X-Files , she played Kim Hsin . In the sports drama Jerry Maguire - Game of the Life by Cameron Crowe , Lucy Liu was seen in a scene with Ivana Miličević and Emily Procter . In the movie Gridlock'd she got the supporting role of Cee-Cee . After that, she made a guest appearance on the series New York Cops - NYPD Blue . In the 1997 thriller City of Industry , Liu was seen alongside Harvey Keitel and Famke Janssen . She then got the role of Amy Lee in the sitcom Pearl , which she impersonated in 22 episodes. As a result, she became better known among the American audience and got bigger roles. The role of lawyer Ling in the television series Ally McBeal helped her to become even better known. She received the Screen Actors Guild Award with the ensemble for acting and was nominated for other prizes (Emmy, Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress).

In 1999 she starred in five productions. She was seen as Pearl at the side of Mel Gibson and Maria Bello in Payback , then as "Girl in the Toy Store" in A True Crime by and with Clint Eastwood . In the film comedies The Strange Love Life of Earthlings , Liu plays Carmen Electra's friend , and in Molly she can be seen as Brenda . In the comedy Knocked Out - A powerful friendship of Ron Shelton embodies the character Lia .

In 2000, she appeared on the big screen in the movie Shang-High Noon as Princess Pei Pei , alongside Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson . That same year she starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore as Alex Munday in Charlie's Angels . In the same year she received the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for "Best Supporting Actress in an Action Film". With the serial adaptation she achieved her final breakthrough; she and her colleagues received a Blockbuster Entertainment Award and an MTV Movie Award for “Best Action Team”. In addition, Liu was nominated for "Best Supporting Actress" at the Saturn Awards .

At the side of Antonio Banderas she got the lead role in Ballistic in 2002. In the following year she embodied one of the "Three Angels" in the sequel 3 Angels for Charlie - Full Power . She played the killer O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino's two-part film Kill Bill .

In 2004 she appeared as Lauren Beck in three consecutive episodes on the American sitcom Joey . The following year, Lucy played a blood dealer in the drama 3 Needles . In the same year, she can be seen alongside Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke in Dominoes . In Paul McGuigan's thriller Lucky # Slevin , Liu played the coroner Lindsey who ends up becoming the girlfriend of the main character Slevin Kelevra ( Josh Hartnett ) and who was supposed to be murdered by Mr. Goodcat Bruce Willis . In the sequel to Mulan , she gave Princess Mei her voice.

In the action comedy Code Name: The Cleaner , Liu portrayed an FBI agent and was involved in the project not only as an actress, but also as a producer . In the series Alles Betty! she had a guest appearance as Grace Chin in two episodes . In Action - Thriller Rise: Blood Hunter she played a reporter who is bitten by a vampire and then the Vampire Slayer. In the lawyer television series Dirty Sexy Money she played the lawyer Nola Lyons in thirteen episodes from 2008 to 2009 .

In the 2008 film year, she appeared in two comedies, Love Rather Be Unusual as Violet and The Year of Getting to Know Us as Anne . In the same year she voiced the snake Viper in Kung Fu Panda and in the sequel Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011). The dialogues of the Elf Silberhauch were also dubbed by Liu. She also spoke the texts for the films Tinker Bell (2008), Tinkerbell - The Search for Lost Treasure (2009), Tinkerbell - A Summer Full of Adventure (2010), the TV film Disney Fairies - The Big Fairy Games (2011), The Secret der Feenflügel (2012) and TinkerBell and the Pirate Fairy (2014).

From 2012 to 2019 she played the role of Dr. Joan Watson in the American series Elementary , a Sherlock Holmes adaptation. In the second season of the series, she made her directorial debut on the episode Paint It Black .
