Future World is an American science fiction film directed by James Franco and Bruce Thierry Cheung . The film is based on a story written by Franco and tells of a young prince who sets out in a post-apocalyptic world together with a robot in search of an alleged cure for his terminally ill mother. The film was released in US cinemas on May 25, 2018.

In a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity is plagued by disease and an ongoing heat wave, there is constant war. A boy of noble birth sets off through the barren wasteland to find medicine for his dying mother, without knowing whether it really exists. His mother, the queen, has a severe fever. The young prince, who comes from one of the last safe oases full of life, is accompanied by his loyal bodyguard, the robot named Ash, who is supposed to help him in the fight against an evil warlord and his killer robot.

Staff and cast
James Franco , who also played the role of a villain in the film, co-directed with Bruce Thierry Cheung . Cheung also wrote the script for the film with Jeremy Cheung and Jay Davis . The Austrian Peter Zeitlinger , who was nominated for an Oscar in 2007 for his film Encounters at the End of the World , which was shot in the Arctic in a two-man team with Werner Herzog , acted as cameraman. The score was contributed by Pablo Clements and James Griffith aka Toydrum . The soundtrack for the film, which includes 16 pieces of music, was released for download on June 14, 2018 by Lakeshore Records.
In May 2016, Milla Jovovich was cast to a drug baroness . The singer and actor Twin Shadow , also known as George Lewis Jr., takes on the role of Ratcatcher in the film. Jeffrey Wahlberg plays the young prince. Lucy Liu can be seen in the role of the queen and his mother, and Snoop Dogg plays the Love Lord, who runs a club in the middle of the devastated landscape. James Franco, who also directed the film, plays the War Lord, a self-proclaimed local ruler and villain in the film. In his role, he also controls the drug business and is the leader of a motorcycle gang that loots everything it encounters on its tours.
Filming and Marketing
Filming took place in Palm Springs and the town of Brawley , about 100 miles away . In the city of Brawley, located in the Imperial Valley on the border with Mexico, filming took place in a disused biomass factory for mesquites on Keystone Road and on other sections of California State Route 111 , which were used for the opening scene of the film. The city is located in the middle of the Colorado desert , which extends over the border into Mexico. A jeep got lost in the sand while filming was in the desert . The production designer had been looking for an area that had real ruins so that he wouldn't have to build the film sets, saving time and money. There were also vacant factories and hotels at the location they found, which fit in well with the story the film tells. Ultimately, the shooting took place almost exclusively within the Imperial Valley, at the Salton Sea (near Bombay Beach ) and the village of Niland and in front of the partly dilapidated buildings there. The filming of Cheung's film Don't Come Back From the Moon , for which Franco and Rabbit Bandini Films had previously acquired the film rights for the novel, had also taken place there. Shooting was finished in May / June 2016.
In May 2016, Method Man released photos of the film set. More set photos were released in September 2016.
Publication and exploitation
A first major international contract was signed with Tiberius Film in October 2016 , and the film distributor secured the distribution rights for Germany. A first trailer for the film was presented in April 2018. The film was released in US cinemas on May 25, 2018. On July 10, 2018, Lionsgate released the film on Blu-ray, DVD and download. In September 2018 the film was shown as part of the Fantasy Film Festival , and at the beginning of October 2018 at the Sitges Film Festival .

Age rating
In the US, the MPAA gave the film an R rating for depicting violence, sex and nude scenes and drug use, which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for people aged 16 and over .
Reviews
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter says the endless chases and fighting sequences quickly turned out to be monotonous, as did the electronic score from Toydrum. The male target audience, however, will be relieved to learn that strip clubs still exist in the post-apocalypse. The rapper Snoop Dogg , who runs a corresponding establishment in the role of Love Lord in Love Town, delivers the most entertaining performance of the film, but on the other hand was confronted with minimal competition. Since the strippers and prostitutes in the film are controlled by electric shocks given to them through a collar around their neck, Scheck hopes that James Franco completed this film before facing multiple allegations of sexual harassment.
