Stormy harvest - In Dubious Battle (Original title: In Dubious Battle ) is an American drama film directed by James Franco . The film is based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck , which was published in a German translation with the title Stormy Harvest and celebrated its premiere on September 3, 2016 as part of the Venice Film Festival 2016 .

In the United States in the 1930s , farm workers begin to organize, form unions , and fight for their rights. Farm worker and activist Jim Nolan is tasked with organizing a farm workers' strike on an apple-picking orchard in a valley in California where the wages the workers receive are barely enough to live on. Nolan and his fellow party member Mac McLeod are hired on the plantation. Most pickers just want to have work there, even if they are mercilessly exploited and poorly paid. Jim and Mac realize they have to convince older worker Al Anderson if they are to achieve their goals, and the path to his support is through his daughter Lisa. Jim and Mac use the emerging displeasure to instigate an uprising against the poor working conditions. Initially, his efforts are crowned with success, but then the plantation owners strike back, and this shows that not all workers are on the side of the union.

Staff and cast
Matt Rager wrote the script adaptation based on the novel by John Steinbeck . James Franco , who also directed the film, took on the role of activist Mac McLeod. Nat Wolff can be seen in the role of his friend Jim Nolan.

The film premiered on September 3, 2016 as part of the Venice Film Festival . It was presented at the Deauville American Film Festival on September 5, 2016 and at the Toronto International Film Festival from September 12, 2016 . The film was released in selected US cinemas on February 17, 2017.
