action

  • 1963: After the death of their daughter, the Stantons move into a new house in Pasadena . Beth Ann, always trying to find a good wife, blames herself for her daughter's death. She tells the neighbor Sheila that she accidentally left the gate to the street open, so that the girl was run over while running after a ball. After Beth discovers that her husband Rob is cheating on her with the waitress April, she meets his lover and becomes friends with her. Beth finds out her husband's longings from April and now tries, for her part, to please Rob. Beth also finds a new friend in the neighbor Mary, who is abused by her chronically jealous husband Ralph. When April becomes pregnant by Rob, Beth decides to leave her husband. When she visits him in the office, there is a conversation with Rob's secretary. She admits that she also had a relationship with Rob. She also admits that after a shepherd's hour with Rob, while fleeing from Beth, she opened the gate of the property through which Beth's daughter could run into the street. When Beth realizes that Rob knew about this, she contacts Mary. Mary prepares a letter to Ralph pretending to break up with him because of a relationship with Rob. When her husband reads the letter, he takes his revolver , goes angrily to the Stantons' house and shoots Rob.
  • 1974: Beth sells the house to Simone, with a young girl by her side. Beth says she is moving to her friend April in New York .
  • 1984: After Simone found out about her husband Karl's homosexuality , she began a relationship with Tommy, the son of her best friend Naomi Harte. With Simone, Karl tries to maintain the appearance of a perfect marriage to friends and neighbors. When Simone's daughter Amy, recently separated from her fiancé Brad, comes to visit, she also tries to hook up with Tommy. Simone can prevent this and supports Amy's and Bard's reconciliation. At a dinner with Brad's family, Simone meets Hector, her former hairdresser and her husband's lover. When Naomi learns of the relationship between Tommy and Simone, the friendship is not only broken, but Simone is also attempted to murder. By chance Simone learns that Karl is sick with AIDS . When she realizes the terrible course of the disease in Karl's friends, she decides to stay with him. She no longer hides her relationship with Tommy and ends it when Tommy leaves town to start studying art. When Karl is severely weakened by the illness, Simone helps her husband to die .
  • In 2017, Simone, now in a wheelchair , sold the house to the Harding couple. Taylor and her husband Eli admire Simone's commitment to the AIDS foundation she founded. They also admire the paintings by the popular artist Thomas Harte from Simone's possession.
  • 2019: Bisexual lawyer Taylor and writer Eli have an open marriage. When Taylor's lover Jade is threatened by her ex-boyfriend Duke, Taylor lets them move into their apartment. Eli, who initially objected, suddenly finds himself ensnared by both women. Nevertheless, there is a certain jealousy . When Duke runs into the trio by chance, he tries in vain to persuade Jade to return to him. Jade enabled Eli to build on his past professional successes, but fell back into his drug addiction . After Taylor learns that Jade and Eli sleep together even without their presence, the two women become increasingly estranged. Through Duke Taylor learns that it is not he who is violent, but Jade, who is also wanted by the police. Although Taylor throws her acquaintance out of the house, Jade comes back and injures Eli with a kitchen knife. In the fight with Taylor, however, she is defeated and is stabbed by her former lover.
  • Epilogue: Taylor and Eli sell the house to a young couple, and when it is handed over, Eli admires the new owner's rifle collection. As Taylor and Eli say goodbye to the man at the door, his wife sees a text message from his apparent lover with clear content on her husband's cell phone. With one of the rifles she waits for her husband to return.
