Michael Feinstein (born September 7, 1956 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American singer , songwriter , pianist and actor . Feinstein is particularly known for his repertoire of songs from the Great American Songbook .

Feinstein was born in 1956 to Florence Mazie and Edward Feinstein. In his childhood he learned to play the piano and at the age of 20 after finishing school in Ohio he went to Los Angeles , where he worked as a piano player in bars for two years. It was there that Feinstein met Ira Gershwin , who employed him for six years in Beverly Hills to catalog his large collection of music recordings (and that of his brother George Gershwin ). During these years Feinstein also met Ira Gershwin's property neighbor Rosemary Clooney in Beverly Hills, with whom he was a close friend until her death.

In 1986 Feinstein released his first CD Pure Gershwin , a collection of music by George and Ira Gershwin. Shortly thereafter, Feinstein released Live at the Algonquin and Remember , pieces of music by Irving Berlin, in 1986 . This was followed by Is not It Romantic and Over There . Feinstein then started a music project in the Great American Songbook : together with Burton Lane , Jule Styne , Jerry Herman , Hugh Martin , Jimmy Webb , Jay Livingston and Ray Evans . In 1992 Feinstein released a children's music album, Pure Imagination . Other albums Forever , Such Sweet Sorrow , Big City Rhythms . Romance on Film / Romance on Broadway , Live with the Israel Philharmonic and Hopeless Romantics followed. Feinstein is the owner of the Manhattan nightclub Feinstein’s at the Regency Theater , a show stage for cabaret performers. Feinstein has been living in a registered partnership since October 2008 . In 2009, Feinstein performed with singer Cheyenne Jackson on a music show The Power of Two in New York City.
