The Closer is an American television series with Kyra Sedgwick in the lead role of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson . The plot of the series was transferred in the last episodes in the branch Major Crimes , in which Sedgwick does not participate.

action

The police officer Brenda Leigh Johnson moves from Atlanta to Los Angeles to lead a special unit of the homicide division as deputy chief at the LAPD ( Los Angeles Police Department ). The new unit deals with particularly difficult murder cases and is initially called the Priority Murder Squad. When Brenda discovered the freshly printed stationery with the letter abbreviation PMS (premenstrual syndrome), the name was quickly changed to Priority Homicide Division, which later became the Major Crimes Division.

main characters

Kyra Sedgwick plays Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson.

Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson is the tough and intelligent woman at the head of the team. Brenda was trained by the CIA. She always approaches cases seriously and has an eccentric character. However, it also has a weak side, especially when it comes to candy. She regularly collides with her management due to her unusual investigative methods, but she is always committed to her people. Johnson has orientation problems in the city, difficulties with parking and it is initially difficult for her to admit to her parents the relationship with Fritz Howard. At the end of the fourth season, Brenda and Fritz get married.

In the fourth season, Brenda shows weakness as a manager for the first time. She is overwhelmed with the arguments between Daniels and Gabriel after their separation and hopes that the two will come to their senses on their own.

In the sixth season, the old Chief of Police resigns and as part of the replacement of the chief position, Captain Raydor, the women's representative of the LAPD, asks Brenda to apply for the position. This leads to a conflict between her and Will Pope, who has worked for this post all his life. However, Pope is not even shortlisted. In the end, only Brenda and Deputy Chief Thomas Delk of the Counter Terrorism Unit are left. Deputy Chief Delk becomes the new chief as Brenda has to shoot an assassin the day before the decision.

Last season, Brenda struggled after she was indirectly responsible for Turell Baylor's death in the previous season and is now being sued. You can finally reach an out-of-court settlement.

Brenda's greatest opponent is the lawyer Philipp Stroh. Already in the fourth season it turns out that Stroh raped and murdered several women. But since there is nothing to prove to him, straw remains at large. They meet again in episode 7.16 when he is representing a rapist as a lawyer. Brenda suspects him to be the rapist's partner, but it turns out that he has nothing to do with it. In the last episode, the police are after straw again. In order to be able to convict him based on his DNA, Brenda attacks him in the elevator of the police building. Shortly afterwards, Straw breaks into her house, Brenda fires three shots at Straw in self-defense and seriously injures him. Because of the attack to get at Stroh's DNA, she is suspended. She quits the LAPD and takes a new job with the public prosecutor.

Assistant Chief of Operations Will Pope is Brenda's boss. She used to have an affair with him. He supports Brenda but demands that she follow the rules. He was also her former chief of police in Washington DC.

In the last episode he is promoted to chief. As a result, he is no longer able to directly supervise major crimes and Taylor takes over his job.

Captain Russell Taylor leads the robbery and murder commission at the LAPD. As it turned out during a conversation with Chief Pope, he had hoped to take over the management of the newly formed unit Priority Homicide and thus to be promoted to Deputy Chief. The fact that instead a police woman was "imported" from Atlanta bothered him again and again. Since Brenda repeatedly interferes in his investigations or criticizes his investigative style, the two often clash. However, as the series progressed, Taylor came to terms with her out of respect for her successes.

At the end of the first season Taylor receives a promotion to Commander , at the end of the seventh to Assistant Chief of Operations , taking over Pope's old job.

Detective Sergeant David Gabriel is Brenda's assistant and most trusted employee. He has a relationship with Daniels, but it breaks up during the fourth season.

In the final season, the department struggled with a leak. Finally it turns out that Gabriel or his girlfriend was responsible for it. As a consequence, he moves to the public prosecutor's office with Brenda.

Detective Lieutenant Louie Provenza is the oldest member of the Major Crimes Division. He pretends to be very tough but has a soft core and has been married five times (to four women). At the end of the fourth season, it is Provenza who surprisingly speaks a power word in the face of the constant bickering between Daniels and Gabriel and makes it clear to both of them that one of them has to leave the team, as the quality of the work of everyone suffers from the disputes.

In the fifth season you first find out his first name when he is so named by his former colleague George Georgette Andrews (guest star Beau Bridges ), who has meanwhile undergone a sex change.

Detective Lieutenant Andy Flynn was initially very unpopular in the team, because as Commander Taylor's mole passed on internals and incited against Brenda. When Taylor tries to open an investigation into Flynn at the end of the first season because of possible procedural errors, Brenda refuses. After everything is cleared up and Taylor incites Brenda again, Flynn explains that he wants to leave the homicide squad and be transferred to their department. Season four reveals that Flynn is a dry alcoholic and regularly gives motivational speeches at AA meetings .

Detective Julio Sanchez is of Hispanic origin. He is fluent in Spanish. Sanchez is especially respectful of his superiors compared to the other team members ("Nice to see you again, Chief Pope, Sir"), which Provenza likes to make fun of. At the end of season 4, he tells that his wife has been dead for six years. During the same season, his brother was shot dead by members of a street gang.

Detective Lieutenant Michael Tao is the computer expert on the team. Before joining the LAPD, he was with the US Army CID .

Special Agent Fritz Howard if Brenda's FBI agent and FBI contact, he provides them with information. Both have had a relationship from the beginning of the series, in the further course this relationship is always the cause of arguments when it comes to responsibilities between the FBI and the LAPD. At the end of the fourth season, the two get married. Like Flynn, Fritz is a dry alcoholic.

Civilian Surveillance Technician Francis "Buzz" Watson is civil employee and surveillance technician of the LAPD. He is very meticulous in his work and works strictly according to regulations. He speaks Spanish and acts as an interpreter on occasion.

Detective Irene Daniels was the second woman on the team alongside Brenda. She frequently interviewed women because she was more gentle with suspects than Brenda. Often she also clarified legal issues. She had a relationship with Gabriel, but this ended in the course of the fourth season. From then on, your relationship with Gabriel is characterized by eternal arguments. At the beginning of the fifth season, she leaves the team.

Captain Sharon Raydor is the head of the Force Investigation Division , which investigates any use of force by LAPD police officers. Here she often comes into conflict with Brenda and her team.

After the suspension of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, she eventually takes over the department of Major Crimes .

Minor characters

Willie Rae Johnson is Brenda's mother. Willie Rae is the buffer between Brenda and her father. Brenda is sometimes embarrassed by her enthusiasm for Brenda's work. Nonetheless, she and Brenda have a close, loving relationship. She dies last season.

Clay Johnson is Brenda's father. He is often hurt by Brenda's neglect of the family, but loves her unconditionally, just as she does the other way around.

Claire Howard is Fritz's colorful sister and Brenda's sister-in-law - a marvel of empathy, as she describes herself, and a believer in numerous alternative methods; she "helps" the department (Major Crimes Division) in one of the cases.

Dr. Crippen is the medical examiner Brenda and her team deal with the most. He's initially upset with Brenda's behavior, as is the rest of the department. At the beginning of the third season he no longer appears due to an injury sustained.

Dr. Morales is a coroner who oversees the work of the injured Dr. Crippen takes over from the third season. He is sarcastic and gruff in his behavior, but passionate about his work. It later turns out that he is gay .

Dr. Terrence Hynes is a clumsy and awkward-looking technician at the LA County's Forensic Medicine Institute with an odd sense of humor. Hynes is responsible for transporting the bodies to the institute for autopsy and for assisting the coroner. Since the episode Murder Free Home , he has also had a doctorate. Terrence has a great weakness for Brenda and tries to invite her several times.

Deputy DA Martin Garnett is the assistant district attorney for the LA County district. He decides whether Brenda's cases will go to court. He and Brenda have often difficult working relationships.

Detective Ross is a rough-and-tumble felony detective who is loyal to Commander Taylor. He is often the target of Brenda's team's jokes.

Tom Blanchard has served as Brenda and Pope's attorney on a number of occasions, regardless of whether he represents clients before the division. He is a highly trained lawyer who knows his skills and knows how to use them. On one occasion he takes a present that Brenda received from Pope but did not open. To protect Brenda, he keeps what it was for himself.

Ricardo Ramos is an LA Times reporter. He occasionally observes the cases of the LAPD or provides assistance with clarification. There has been a certain tension between him and the department since a newspaper article in which he assumes a preference for wealthy, white victims when selecting cases.

Charlene "Charlie" Johnson is Brenda's niece. She is brought to Los Angeles by Willie Rae for Brenda to deal with her problems. She causes a lot of trouble, including one episode she gets Brenda to eat hash cookies.
