The seventh and final season began broadcasting in the US on June 6, 2016, and the series finale aired on September 5, 2016. The seventh season has been running in Germany since February 22, 2017. So far, five seasons have been broadcast in Austria and three in Switzerland.

action

The main cast with Janet Tamaro on the set of Rizzoli & Isles

At the center of the series are the two best friends Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles. Rizzoli works as a detective on the Boston Homicide Division. In this male-dominated world, she gets along well with her boyish demeanor. Her closest colleague and former partner is veteran detective Vince Korsak. Together with Rizzoli's partner, the young Frost, the three form a successful team of investigators until Frost dies in a traffic accident.

The Rizzoli family often plays an important role. Jane's mother Angela and her father Frank Sr. split up over the course of the first season, with Jane taking in Angela and then Maura later. Jane has two brothers: Frankie is a police officer like Jane, but on patrol duty. He's around Jane a lot because he's interested in becoming a detective like her. Korsak and Frost support him so that he can tackle the detective exam in the course of the second season, but is ultimately not promoted and remains a cop in the third season. Only after the serial death of Frost (due to the death of the actor ) does he become a full member of the team. Jane and Frankie's youngest brother, Tommy, is the family's "black sheep" who has been convicted of minor offenses several times and is in jail at the time of the first season. He's getting released in season two and he's trying to be honest. In the third season he learns that his father's ex-fiancée is expecting a child from him, which he will raise after his father's birth.

In contrast to Jane Rizzoli, who came from a simple working-class family, Maura Isles is a child of the upper class in Boston. As the chief medical examiner for the state of Massachusetts , she works closely with Rizzoli's team on all cases. Isles is wealthy, cultured, educated, fashion-savvy, and extremely intelligent. The resulting social and intellectual contrasts between the friends Rizzoli and Isles are humorously staged in the series. Isles has some habits that make it slightly more difficult for her to deal with other people (and Rizzoli too), such as her rejection of even trivial lies, her refusal of ill-considered determinations, her biological view of emotions and interpersonal relationships and her lack of understanding of some social customs. Isles is known to have been adopted, and while she loves and feels that her adoptive parents are her true parents, Isles' relationship with her mother is emotionally difficult. The two can, however, overcome this gap - also through the intervention of Rizzoli.

During the course of the series, a murder investigation revealed that Isles' biological father, Patrick “Paddy” Doyle, is the most powerful underworld boss in Boston. This realization and the repeated contact with Doyle throw Isles into moral conflict, as she unreservedly condemns his actions and fears that she is similar to him because of her biological relationship. On the other hand, she develops daughters for him and also benefits from his acts of violence when he kills a criminal who threatens her life to protect her. In the finale of the second season he again kills a murderer who endangers his daughter and is subsequently shot by Rizzoli. In this context, Maura Isles learns the identity of her biological mother: Dr. Hope Martin is an internationally respected pathologist and is similar to Isles in many ways. The two women get along well at first. However, Martin was made to believe by Doyle that Maura died in childbirth and is dismissive when the truth is revealed. She later returns because her sick daughter needs a donor kidney, which Isles hesitates to donate.

The backstory of the series is based on the novel The Surgeon . Well before the series began, Jane Rizzoli was investigating the case of serial killer Charles Hoyt. Hoyt, expelled from medical school, used his extensive medical knowledge to systematically torture and kill women. Ultimately, he brought Rizzoli into his power and impaled her hands on the floor with scalpels. When he tried to slit Rizzoli's throat, her partner Korsak shot Hoyt to the ground and saved Rizzoli's life. These events are only told in flashbacks in the television series . Since those events, Rizzoli has been traumatized, while Hoyt has developed a fixation on murdering her.

The pilot episode " Wounds " (1 × 01 See One, Do One, Teach One ) is largely based on the novel The Master . Rizzoli and Isles investigate a killer who copied Hoyt's approach and is also necrophilic . Rizzoli and Isles discover that the copycat is a soldier who met Hoyt in medical school and is now imitating Hoyt's approach. Meanwhile, Hoyt escapes from prison and meets his "apprentice". You catch Rizzoli and try to kill her. She manages to disarm the two and burns Hoyt's eye with a torch. With the help of a stun gun , she can defend herself and then shoots the "apprentice". When Hoyt picks up a gun, it shoots him in the hands, inflicting injuries similar to those he once inflicted on her. Hoyt is arrested again, but Rizzoli and Isles are confronted again in the episode " Eiskalt " (1 × 08 I'm Your Boogie Man ) as another "apprentice" to Hoyts - the wife of a victim who fall for Hoyt is - Rizzoli and her brother Frankie kidnapped to force Hoyt out of prison and get revenge on Rizzoli. However, she can be overpowered and killed by the two siblings. Finally, the cancerous Hoyt, who has since found another helper in a prison guard, arranges a murder in the prison in the episode " Nemesis " (2 × 10 Remember Me ) and baits Rizzoli with revelations about a crime he committed a few years ago . His ultimate goal is to kill Rizzoli and Isles so that he does not die alone, but Rizzoli can overwhelm and kill him.

production

The series was planned by the broadcaster TNT in March 2008. In early October 2009, TNT ordered a pilot episode under the previous title Rizzoli . Janet Tamaro wrote the script for the pilot . Casting for the series began in late October 2009, and in January 2010 TNT gave the go-ahead for a ten-part first season under the new title Rizzoli & Isles . The first season of the series was filmed around Los Angeles in five months. After just three episodes broadcast, an extension of thirteen episodes (2nd season) was decided. On August 5, 2011, TNT announced the production of a third season with fifteen episodes, a year later that of a fourth season consisting of 16 episodes. In mid-August 2013, the US cable broadcaster TNT announced the production of a fifth season consisting of 15 episodes. On August 19, 2013, Barry Frost's cast member, Lee Thompson Young , was found in his apartment with a fatal gunshot wound . According to his manager, he committed suicide . At the time of his death, the penultimate episode of the fourth season was being filmed. A sixth season was ordered in December 2014. This includes 18 episodes. In July 2015, the broadcaster ordered the thirteen-part seventh and final season.

reception

Rizzoli & Isles quickly gained a lot of attention in the LGBT community because of the strong lesbian subtext in portraying the relationship between the two main characters, Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles . The series has also been compared to the series Xena - The Warrior Princess in this regard . However, the show's producers stated that this was not intended. In an interview with After Ellen , series writer Janet Tamaro said that she and the other authors clearly had no intention of doing this, but could understand how this impression could come about and how open to all further developments. Lead actress Sasha Alexander sees the relationship between the two main characters personally as a purely friendly, very close comradeship, but stated that she and most of those involved in the production welcome the further interpretation of the relationship by the fan community and this certainly with the development of the series will take into account. Tess Gerritsen, the creator of the characters, explained that the characters in her novels were never intended to be lesbian, but that the series has also changed the way they perceive the characters and how they relate to one another. She welcomes the increased integration of allusions to the lesbian subtext in the series.

Before Rizzoli & Isles began broadcasting in Switzerland, the online edition of 20 Minuten incorrectly reported that the two main characters were in an openly lesbian relationship.
