Angela Michelle "Angie" Harmon (born August 10, 1972 in Highland Park , Texas ) is an American actress . She is best known for her roles as Attorney Abbie Carmichael on the television series Law & Order and as Jane Rizzoli in the crime series Rizzoli & Isles .

Life

She is of Greek - Irish - Scottish - Indian ( Cherokee ) descent. Both parents were models . She won a cover contest for Seventeen Magazine when she was 15 . After high school , she settled in New York City and started modeling. She was booked for editorials in editions of Elle , Cosmopolitan and in French and English editions of Vogue and Glamor . She worked for Calvin Klein , Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren , among others .

Harmon is a Republican and gave a speech at the 2004 Republican National Convention honoring American war heroes. She was married to former US football player Jason Sehorn from 2001 to 2014 , with whom she has three daughters, who were born in 2003, 2005 and 2008.

Acting career

She was discovered by David Hasselhoff , who offered her a lead role on Baywatch Nights , even though she had no acting experience. She became known for her role as prosecutor Abbie Carmichael in the television series Law & Order , which she played from the ninth to the eleventh season. In 2007 she took on a leading role in the series Women's Murder Club , which was discontinued after 13 episodes. From 2010 to 2016 she played a leading role as Detective Jane Rizzoli alongside Sasha Alexander in the crime series Rizzoli & Isles .
