action
Ruby Mountains , winter 1868. Three years after the end of the American Civil War , Carver, a bitter ex-Colonel of the Southern Army, with four hired, extremely seedy mercenaries , succeeds in finding a former Northern State officer named Gideon in a snow-covered mountainous region of Nevada . Carver is determined to kill Gideon, whom he blames for the death of his family. One of the men paid by Carver wounds Gideon, who nevertheless manages to escape. However, he has to leave his horse and equipment behind.
Gideon's escape leads him, armed only with a large hunting knife, through a wooded, snow-covered and deserted wilderness. The wounded man initially succeeds in laying the wrong tracks, dividing his pursuers and killing one of his captors. With the dead man's weapon he escapes the almost hopeless situation. At a different time, the remaining, apparently unscrupulous people around their leader, Carver, resume the hunt, and they manage to catch the injured man again. As before, the aging Yankee captain eludes his pursuers and gradually decimates their number.
The hunt stretches for days from the snow-covered mountains into a desert-like bush landscape, where the two warring civil war veterans finally face each other alone in a bitter duel, which the repentant Gideon wins. Carver is spared and gets away with it. Gideon pulls away.
Carver continues his hunt full of hatred, following his emaciated adversary into a desert. In a surreal perception, the hostile opponents are given the choice independently of each other by a suddenly appearing traveling saleswoman, to decide on a weapon or on goods essential for survival. The choice falls on a revolver with a shot of ammunition. Finally, there is a decisive confrontation between the men. Carver is shot by Gideon, and they realize that they are in dire straits. Completely exhausted, the two march in different directions under the scorching desert sun. Here the film ends abruptly. Nothing is learned about the further whereabouts of the men.
Reviews
A number of critics received the film unfavorably. Thomas Delapa criticized: "After a lively first hour, Van Acken is satisfied with a parched end [...]." Todd McCarthy criticized: "Apart from outbreaks of brute force, there is nothing exciting or new here." And Neil Smith reproached: " Rob Roy chases James Bond in this traditional western that's cripplingly poor in action. ”To his disadvantage, Derek Malcolm and Todd McCarthy have compared the film to Anthony Mann's westerns (such as nude violence ).
Admirers of the film include Pete Hammond, who wrote, "We just don't see these kinds of beautiful, visually stunning action adventures that much anymore."
The lexicon of international films judged: “Western epic reminiscent of classic models that convincingly addresses the question of guilt, atonement and vengeance. The main focus is on the conflict, to sound out the point in time at which the demand for (self) justice turns into one's own guilt. "
