action

The film takes place in 1713 , at the beginning of the 18th century , when Scottish society is in a state of upheaval. The old clan system is slowly disappearing and poor Scots migrate to North America to start a new existence there. Robert Roy MacGregor is a Scotsman who lives as a law abiding subject near a small town in the Highlands .

Rob Roy and five followers follow a gang of cattle thieves and catch up with them. The leader is killed, the others are allowed to move on without the cattle.

Rob Roy borrows £ 1,000 from the Marquess of Montrose James Graham to buy cattle, drive them over a longer distance to a more profitable market, and earn money from them.

The bastard Archibald Cunningham, allegedly fathered by a nobleman, lives as a favorite and sword fencer at the court of the Marquess. Montrose's steward, Killearn, informs Archibald about the loan and the two agree to raise the money.

The sum is handed over by Killearn to the messenger sent by Rob Roy, however, contrary to what has been agreed, not as a letter of credit, but as coin. Archibald Cunningham follows the messenger, murders him at night in the forest and steals the money.

In return for the money lost, Montrose asks MacGregor to slander the Duke of Argyll . MacGregor is supposed to testify that Argyll is Jacobite and thus an enemy of the English king. When MacGregor refuses, Montrose wants to arrest him and lock him in the debtor's house . MacGregor flees and is chased by Cunningham and English soldiers. MacGregor's house is burned down and his wife, Mary, raped by Cunningham. Mary hides the act in order to prevent her husband from careless actions.

The maid Betty, impregnated by Cunningham and abandoned, reveals the part of the plot to Mary that she accidentally overheard. Killearn is kidnapped by Rob Roy after a victorious battle against a friend of the slain cattle thief. Mary interrogates the prisoner but does not get a confession from the rape witness and severely injures him with a dagger. Killearn flees the house, but is caught and drowned by Rob Roy's younger brother Allister.

Red coats chase the McGregors. The too combative Allister does not hide, but shoots one of the soldiers. In the subsequent chase, Allister is shot down and fatally injured. The brothers can hide in the fog for a while while the other McGregors escape. The dying Allister reveals what was done to Mary. After Allister's death, Rob is finally caught. His horse is shot and he is arrested. Cunningham mistreats the prisoner to break his sake.

Meanwhile, Mary turns to Argyll for help.

Rob Roy is brought to Montrose, who wants to hang him on a bridge. MacGregor jumps into the raging river and is able to escape despite his bonds.

After talking to Mary, Rob Roy also turns to the Duke of Argyll. He arranges a duel, which includes the mutual hatred of the opponents, Rob Roy's debts and the attempted slander. Cunningham has easily won his last duel against Schotten, as an excellent fencer with the sword this time sure to a Broadswoard ( Sync .: broadsword to defeat armed) opponents. In fact, the Scot was already defeated when he succeeded in killing the overly arrogant Englishman with one surprising blow.

Rob Roy's debts are canceled and life goes on. Mary is expecting another child, but does not know whether the rapist Cunningham or her husband fathered it. For Rob Roy it is still his child.

Reviews

James Berardinelli praised the portrayals of the bad guys on ReelViews , especially those by Tim Roth. He also praised the direction by Michael Caton-Jones, the camera work and the film music.

Roger Ebert praised the portrayal of Tim Roth in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 7, 1995, which he compared with his appearance in the film Pulp Fiction . He described the portrayal of John Hurt as "fascinating" ("intriguing").

“The film almost completely dispenses with the elucidation of the historical circumstances and instead focuses on the MacGregor couple's relationship as a sentimental love story. Despite good acting performances and scenic shots from the Scottish Highlands, a rather insignificant entertainment film. "

Awards

Tim Roth won for his role Film Awards BAFTA Award and the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor; in the same category he was nominated for the Oscar , the Golden Globe Award and the Saturn Award .
