action

Writer Catherine Tramell moved to London from San Francisco . While having sex with a well-known British soccer star while driving, the car, a Spyker C8 Laviolette , falls off the road and crashes into the Thames . Catherine survives, her lover drowns. A short time later , Scotland Yard, under the direction of Cop Washburn, started an investigation into the mysterious case, and the criminal psychologist Dr. Michael Glass is called in to examine Tramell before a possible trial begins against her. The investigation is dropped, however, and Tramell takes Dr. Glass to see him as a psychologist. The seductive and intelligent blonde has Glass as the protagonist for her latest novel in sight and begins a hot affair with him.

The psychologist soon finds himself trapped in a dangerous web of sex and intrigue. Several murders are committed in his vicinity, Glass is suspected of being a perpetrator, and his career is stressed. From a summary of Tramell's latest novel, Glass learns who the next murder victim will be.

Glass kills Washburn and is sentenced to a psychiatric hospital. Tramell visits him and says she changed the ending of her novel. In the flashbacks you can see that he also committed the previous murders. However, Tramell's last comments do not allow any clear conclusion as to who is the real culprit.

At the end Glass reads the novel which Tramell dedicated to him with the words: “Without you I would not have made it; with love Catherine ”.

Litigation

In 2000, a possible theatrical release in March 2002 was considered and a screenplay based on Joe Eszterha's film characters was written by Leora Barish and Henry Bean . However, the casting process for the male lead dragged on. Robert Downey Jr. was under discussion for the male lead but had to retire from production after he became aware of his drug use. Benjamin Bratt , the producers' favorite, was turned down by Sharon Stone for being too bad an actor.

No male lead had been found by the time production began in 2001, so the film was discontinued. Sharon Stone then sued the producers for allegedly breaching their contract. Stone stated that she had agreed to play the role of Catherine Tramell again after a "pay-or-play arrangement". That also included paying their $ 14 million (according to other sources, $ 15 million) fee if the film shouldn't be made.

In 2004, shortly before the case was due to go to court, both sides agreed under secret terms that the film should be finished.
