The Toronto International Film Festival ( TIFF ) is a ten-day film festival with no competition, that since 1976 the Canadian Toronto takes place. It is held annually in early / mid-September and follows immediately after the Venice International Film Festival . The festival Tower , a new building at 299 Adelaide Street West, also known as the Bell Lightbox , is the seat and venue .

The organizer is the TIFF Group , which, in addition to handling the international film festival, also manages other film activities in Canada . Since 1984 there has been a separate program for Canadian films, which was split up in 2004 into Canada First! with Canadian first films in full length and in Short Cuts Canada with Canadian short films .

The Toronto International Film Festival is, along with the World Film Festival in Montreal and the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, the only film festival in North America that is accredited by the international film producers association FIAPF .

history

The beginning of the film festival in Toronto took place in 1976 under the official name "The Festival of Festivals". At the first event, which screened the world's most successful films in Toronto, 35,000 cineastes saw 127 films from 30 countries. In 1995 the event was renamed the Toronto International Film Festival (tiff.). In the years that followed, the film festival developed into an event in which films, directors (including Paul Haggis , Michael Moore , David Cronenberg , Don McKellar , James Cameron ), screenwriters and actors became well known. In 2001 the Canada's TopTen program was started. In 2003 planning began for a new building for the event building. In 2005 the festival celebrated its 30th birthday. From 2007 to 2010 the new building named “Lightbox” was built.

Due to the steadily growing popularity of this event, the number of films presented rose to 336 from 64 countries in 2009. The number of viewers also increased further to 500,000.

In 2012 the 37th edition of the festival took place from September 6 to 16, 2012. The 39th TIFF ran from September 4 to 14, 2014.

The 40th anniversary took place from September 10th to 20th, 2015. It opened with the film Demolition , with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role.

Print media such as the LA Times , Philadelphia Inquirer , Miami Herald , New York Times , Toronto Star , Times of India , The Globe & Mail and Toronto Sun provide daily information about current events. American, Canadian and international TV channels will be reporting live from the festival on programs such as Access Hollywood , Entertainment Tonight (ET) , Red Carpet Diary , eTalk , Entertainment Tonight Canada , Reuters , The Canadian Press , Canapress and UPI . Audience award

Prize winner 2018: Peter Farrelly, who later also won the Oscar for best film for Green Book .

Since the Toronto Film Festival, unlike other festivals such as Berlin , Cannes or Venice , does not have an official competition jury, the most important prize is the People's Choice Award , which is given to the best feature film and documentary film by festival visitors. In addition, various film critic associations give separate awards during the festival.
