Lee Daniels
Lee Louis Daniels (* 24. December 1959 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American film and television producer , film and television director , screenwriter and actor .
Life
Lee Daniels was born on December 24, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Clara Watson and William Daniels. He went to Lindenwood College in Saint Charles ( Missouri ).
Daniel's first film as a producer, Monster's Ball , earned Halle Berry the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 as the first African American actress . The film was also nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category. He made his directorial debut in 2005 with the film Shadowboxer and was nominated for it at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián in the category “Best New Director”.
His second directorial work, the social drama Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire , premiered in January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival and received the Grand Jury Prize. In May 2009 it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival . In 2010 Daniels received a Precious Oscar nomination in the categories of film and directing and a Career Achievement Award at the American Black Film Festival .
In 2012 Daniels completed his third feature film The Paperboy , which is based on the novel by Pete Dexter . Set in Miami in the 1960s, the thriller centers on an aimless young man (played by Zac Efron ) who tries to help his brother ( Matthew McConaughey ) save a seemingly innocent man ( John Cusack ) from the death penalty. He falls in love with a woman ( Nicole Kidman ) who maintains correspondence with the death row inmate. For The Paperboy , Daniels received his first invitation to the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2012 .
He also came up with the American television series Empire and Star , in which he is also involved as a director, screenwriter and executive producer .
