The 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is to take place in September as usual, from September 10 to 19, 2020. In addition to screenings in cinemas, the films are also to be made available online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Drive-ins are also planned. With 50 feature films and five short film programs, the program is drastically reduced compared to previous editions. In comparison, over 300 films were shown at the 2019 festival. Only socially distant performances that require the physical presence of the audience are planned for the first five days.
In July 2020 it was announced that the Toronto International Film Festival, as part of the Non-Competitive Alliance with the Venice International Film Festival , the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival , which will also be held in autumn 2020, has agreed to part with one another this year To say goodbye to competition among each other and instead to work together. For example, the film drama Nomadland by Chloé Zhao will premiere on September 11, 2020 in simultaneous screenings at the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, presented on the evening of the same day at the Telluride Film Festival and later shown at the New York Film Festival .
In July 2020, the Digital TIFF Bell Lightbox was launched, a digital platform named after the headquarters of the festival organization, through which a selection of films from previous years are made available for loan. These will be offered until September 14, 2020, such as Songs My Brothers Taught Me from 2015 by Chloé Zhao, who is also represented by Nomadland , but also Guest of Honor from filmmaker Atom Egoyan and First Cow by Kelly Reichardt , both from 2019.
The industry conferences will be held to a lesser extent than in previous years. Speakers include well-known personalities in the industry such as Darren Aronofsky , Olivier Assayas , Gael García Bernal , Derek Cianfrance , Barry Jenkins , Hirokazu Kore-eda , Brie Larson , Natalie Portman , Zachary Quinto , Isabella Rossellini , Albert Serra and Wim Wenders and up and coming Voices of the film industry such as Haifaa Al-Mansour , Shamier Anderson , Kasi Lemmons and Olivia Wilde for the first time also the TIFF ambassadors. These are intended to bring together renowned filmmakers and actors.
