The 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is to take place in September as usual, from September 10 to 19, 2020. In addition to screenings in cinemas, the films are also to be made available online due to the coronavirus pandemic. Drive-ins are also planned. With 50 feature films and five short film programs, the program is drastically reduced compared to previous editions. In comparison, over 300 films were shown at the 2019 festival. Only socially distant performances that require the physical presence of the audience are planned for the first five days.

In July 2020 it was announced that the Toronto International Film Festival, as part of the Non-Competitive Alliance with the Venice International Film Festival , the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival , which will also be held in autumn 2020, has agreed to part with one another this year To say goodbye to competition among each other and instead to work together.
