Literary template

The film is based on the novel Dance On My Grave by Aidan Chambers

The film is based on the novel Dance On My Grave by the British writer Aidan Chambers from 1982. The novel is about two boys who met during a summer in the English seaside resort of Southend in the early 1980s. At the beginning of the novel, 16-year-old Hal Robinson is arrested by the police for dancing on a grave. In retrospect, the boy tells how it came about from his point of view. When he met 18-year-old Barry Gorman, he was fascinated by his exuberant energy and self-confidence. Shy Hal lets himself be carried away by the bundle of energy and does not even notice that he has at some point reached the point from which he can no longer imagine a life without his friend. But then there is a terrible argument between the two. The relationship between Barry and Hal lasted seven weeks, but before the grass can grow again, Barry has a fatal accident with his motorcycle. Because he promised his dead friend, Hal dances on his grave. The novel was published in 1984 in a German translation by Cornelia Holfelder-von der Tann under the title Dance on my grave near Würzburg Arena.

Aidan Chambers was born in 1934 in Chester-le-Street, northeast England, and worked after joining a Church of England monastery in 1960 and continuing to teach as a monk. In 1967 Chambers left the Order and has lived as a freelance writer in Gloucestershire since then. After initially writing for younger readers, he turned to young adults from 1975 and began his award-winning dance series with Breaktime in 1978 , in which each novel tells a separate story of young people. In 2002 Chambers received the renowned Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his complete works.

Direction and script

Directed by François Ozon , who also wrote the script. In the summer of 1985, the then 17-year-old director had read Chambers' novel in the French edition entitled La Danse du coucou and, according to his own statements, identified himself strongly with Alex, especially because of his naivete and he was just exploring romantic feelings. The novel had a strong impact on him because the two protagonists were of the same age.

Ozone moved the story to Normandy. Eté 85 was filmed in the northern French municipality of
Le Tréport, among others

In his adaptation, however, ozone changed a few things compared to the original, as he had planned as a teenager after reading the book. While the story in the novel takes place in the English seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea , where Chambers attended Westcliff High School for three years and got his first job, it was relocated to Le Tréport on the Normandy coast for the film, as ozone was the French This seaside resort, with its red brick houses, pebble beach and not-too-renovated town, was considered perfect to capture the 1980s there. The au pair, who is Norwegian in the book, made Ozone English.

Cast and filming

The young actors Benjamin Voisin and Félix Lefebvre play the leading roles David and Alexis, or Alex for short. Philippine Velge took on the role of Kate. Isabelle Nanty and Laurent Fernandez play Alex 'Madame and Monsieur Robin, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi David's mother Madame Gorman. Melvil Poupaud plays Monsieur Lefèvre.

The recordings were made on 22 days of shooting between May 28th and June 26th 2019 in Normandy, for example in the northern French communities of Le Tréport and Yport and in the former fishing village of Pourville-sur-Mer. The Belgian Hichame Alaouie acted as cameraman . The film was shot under the working title Eté 84 .

reception

Reviews

Etienne Sorin from Le Figaro writes that Été 85 is not a gay version of La Boum and that François Ozon is anything but a sentimental director when he lets Alexis announce in a voice-over with very little candy pink at the beginning of the film: “David Gorman takes the stage. He is a future corpse. "
