In her house (Original title: Dans la maison ) is a French film by François Ozon . It is based on Juan Mayorga's play El chico de la última fila .

action

The French teacher Germain is unhappy in his job and especially disappointed in the abilities of his students. But when in the new school year he receives an essay from high school student Claude, who reports on a stay in the house of his friend Rapha, he is enthusiastic about the pupil's power of observation. He also reads the text to his wife Jeanne, who runs an art gallery, which stands out from the crowd. Germain, who would have liked to become a writer himself, supports Claude in his attempts in this regard. Each new text by Claude describes more details from the life of the Raphas family and ends with the words “to be continued”.

At the beginning, Claude Rapha only helps with math problems. In the process, he gets to know Rapha's father and mother and learns to appreciate a family that he never had. Claude settles into the family and writes about his observations. He shows strong voyeuristic traits. Germain gets caught up in the events described and would like to know how things will continue. When Claude told Germain one day that he could only continue to give Rapha tutoring if Rapha got a very good grade in the next test, Germain procured a math test from a colleague.

Claude visits Rapha's mother Esther on Saturdays when Rapha goes to play basketball with his father. When Claude is expelled from Rapha's family because he has penetrated too deeply, he visits Jeanne to find an end to his story and seduces her. Germain, who has since been suspended because of the math test incident, is now losing his wife, who is leaving him.

Reviews

“Ozone holds the many threads of his malicious mind game tightly in his hand. The reflections and changes in perspective between imagination and reality are also aesthetically visible. You can literally smell the smell of the classroom in which the teacher and his pupil pore over the description of the "Raphas" in secretive sessions. In contrast to the realistically gray everyday school life, the object of her literary fantasies, Raphaël's home, is surrounded by a slightly hyper-real aura. Especially in Claude's perception, the small villa looks like a dream castle in the shimmering light. Finally, Germain himself appears in the salon, only visible to the audience, and looks over Claude's shoulder while trying to flirt with Esther. As if by the way, he raises troubling questions: Are novels (and films) socially accepted voyeurism? Does fiction transcend the boundaries of dreary everyday life, or does the flight from reality worsen the frustration of an unlived life? "

“It is a mediation that is full of traps. François Ozon, who, after the comedy Potiche , once again proves to be the most versatile of contemporary French filmmakers, made fun of it right from the start portraying Germain (perfectly embodied as a philistine by Fabrice Luchini) as the puppet who in all traps these traps. We could easily overlook the fact that it is ourselves who by no means have better certainties in this game of fiction. Yes, Ozon aims to mislead the cinema audience even more. "

- Frankfurter Allgemeine

“Everything is staggering, the reliability of reality and perception is gone, maybe no longer important. Ozone makes it impossible to clearly distinguish between any levels, and thus achieves that only one thing is perceived as safe: what is being told. Everything has dissolved into history, with a malicious grin she towers over what has happened and what has been conceived and remains the last remnant that is worth clinging to. Ozone celebrates storytelling as an overpowering set of instruments that subtly and insidiously evades all control. "
