5 × 2 - Five times two is a French feature film directed by François Ozon in 2004.

action

The film tells the story of a couple in reverse chronology, starting with the failure of this relationship and going back to the magic of their first meeting. These are the five chapters of their shared history.

  • The divorce
  • The crisis
  • The birth of their child
  • The wedding
  • The encounter

Remarks

The five chapters are separated from each other by recordings of five Italian chansons that match the respective station . The songs are by Paolo Conte , Gino Paoli , Iller Pataccini , Luigi Tenco and Alec Wilder . Ennio Morricone contributed a sixth song.

In a French DVD special edition, the story is told in the "correct" order.

Reviews

Urs Jenny said in the mirror : “The great thing about this film is that it makes his reverse gear completely plausible and obvious. Paradoxically, his narrative movement leads one to […] play with the question […]: Was this relationship, this love between Marion and Gilles doomed to failure from the start? "

The Filmdienst (21/2004) describes the film as a “subtle reflection on the misunderstandings and insecurity, the loneliness for two and the fragility of feelings up to moments of strong longing and tenderness, devotion and lust”. The film is "staged in great detail" and "played excellently".

"[T] rotz brilliant actors and some excellent details seem psychologically unproductive to the episodes from Marion and Gilles' life, which are scattered over a period of five years", however, found Cinema . “The sadly everyday story of the decline of a marriage” is “told backwards, but not very effectively”.

Awards

The film ran in 2004 in the competition at the Venice International Film Festival for the Golden Lion , but could not prevail against Mike Leigh's Vera Drake . Valeria Bruni Tedeschi won the Pasinetti Prize for Best Actress.
