Gino Paoli 2010

Gino Paoli (born September 23, 1934 in Monfalcone , Province of Gorizia ) is an Italian cantautore and former politician .

In addition to his own successes, Paoli wrote numerous songs over the course of his career that were sung by other interpreters, for example for Claudio Villa , Ornella Vanoni , Luigi Tenco , Gianni Morandi , Patty Pravo , Franco Battiato and Marco Masini . He is considered a pioneer of Lucio Dalla , whom he met and promoted in 1964, but also of Francesco De Gregori and Francesco Guccini .

Career

music

Born in Monfalcone, he moved to Genoa just a few months after his birth . Paoli got his passion for music from his mother, who was a pianist. In Genoa he teamed up with other musicians such as Luigi Tenco , Bruno Lauzi and Fabrizio de Andre . This group of songwriters, who were counted as part of the so-called “Genoese School” (Scuola di Genova) , initiated the fashion of Italian author's songs and can thus be described as pioneers of music production in Italy. Later Paoli worked with numerous Italian musicians.

Between 1959 and 1960 he recorded his first songs with Dischi Ricordi : Il cielo in una stanza , which was later made famous by Mina , and La gatta and Sassi , which were great sales successes. At the Sanremo Festival in 1961 he presented the song Un uomo vivo with Tony Dallara , other successful titles were Gli innamorati sono semper soli , Senza fine and Un perfetto delitto d'amor . One of Paolis' internationally best-known songs was Sapore di sale (1963), which he recorded with the orchestra of Ennio Morricone (with Gato Barbieri on saxophone) and which reached the top of the Italian single charts. During these years he also wrote the famous Senza fine for Ornella Vanoni .

After these early successes, Paoli disappeared from the limelight , apart from two Sanremo appearances ( 1964 with Ieri ho incontrato mia madre , together with Antonio Prieto ; 1966 with La carta vincente , together with Ricardo ). In the early 1970s he returned with the album Le due facce dell'amore and received increasing approval from the critics. In 1974 he was awarded the Tenco Prize . In the 80s he achieved successes again with some singles, such as Ti lascio una canzone (1981), Averti addosso (1984), which was awarded a Targa Tenco as the best song, or Una lunga storia d'amore (written for the film Una donna allo specchio from 1984). After a joint tour with Ornella Vanoni, a successful live album was released in 1985, and in 1986 Paoli wrote the two songs Come il sole all'improvviso and Con le mani together with Zucchero .

Paoli in 2004

In 1989 he entered the race again in Sanremo with Questa volta no . In 1991 Paoli returned to the singles charts for the first time with the song Quattro amici after winning the Festivalbar competition. In the course of this success his album Matto come un gatto reached the top of the album charts. Another success came in 1993 with the song La bella e la bestia , a duet with his daughter Amanda , which he had recorded for the Italian soundtrack of the Disney cartoon Beauty and the Beast . In 2002 he returned to the Sanremo Festival and presented Un altro amore , with which he reached third place. Another collaboration with Ornella Vanoni resulted in the album Ti ricordi? No non mi ricordo , followed by another live album together. In the same year, the Cantautore was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Prize at the Sanremo Festival.

Together with the jazz musicians Enrico Rava , Danilo Rea , Flavio Boltro , Rosario Bonaccorso and Roberto Gatto , Paoli released the jazz album Milestones in 2007 . Un incontro in jazz . Two years later he presented the album Storie , accompanied Malika Ayane on one of her Sanremo appearances and celebrated his 50th stage anniversary with the extensive compilation Senza fine , for which he re-recorded Il cielo in una stanza together with Carla Bruni . Another jazz album was released in 2011, and he continued to work with Danilo Rea in the following years (2012 for Due come noi che… , 2013 for Napoli con amore and 2017 for 3 ). In 2013 he became president of the Italian collecting society SIAE , until his voluntary resignation in 2015. In 2018 he received the Premio Chiara in the category Le parole della musica .

politics

In 1987 Gino Paoli stood as a candidate for the Italian Communist Party for election to the Chamber of Deputies and was elected to parliament. After failing to reach re-election in the following legislative period, Paoli soon withdrew from politics after 1992.

Life

Paoli is married. He has a son from his first marriage and a daughter, Amanda Sandrelli, from a relationship with actress Stefania Sandrelli . He has two more sons from his second marriage.
