The 14th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from January 30th to February 1st in the municipal casino in Sanremo in 1964 and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno and Giuliana Lojodice .
procedure
After the rather disappointing success of the last edition, Gianni Ravera , now for the third time the organizer of the festival, introduced some innovations. The songs sent in, now again 24 instead of 20, had to be assigned to their performers by the record companies, instead of being assigned by the organizers as before. For the traditional second version of each song, however, international singers and groups were invited who, with a few exceptions, also sang in Italian. The conductors were also assigned to the songs, so that this year 22 different people came to the conductor's desk. In addition, the RAI no longer only broadcast the finals live, but also the second evening.
Among the stars of the 40 participants were the Americans Paul Anka , who was assigned to the newcomer Roby Ferrante , Ben E. King , Frankie Avalon , Bobby Rydell , Frankie Laine , Peggy March and Gene Pitney . Peter Kraus was represented from Germany , once at the side of Nicola Arigliano and once with Emilio Pericoli . In addition to 16-year-old Peggy March, many young singers appeared, including the winners of the last Castrocaro Festival , Gigliola Cinquetti (16) and Bruno Filippini (18), but also Robertino (17), Bobby Solo (18), Lilly Bonato ( 16) and Fabrizio Ferretti (18). The well-known faces included Claudio Villa , Domenico Modugno , Pino Donaggio , Tony Renis , Milva , Giorgio Gaber and Gino Paoli .
Domenico Modugno made a name for himself that year because he refused to speak to Paul Anka, allegedly because of an unsuccessful loan at an earlier meeting in Los Angeles in 1959 . Anka also expressed his lack of understanding of Modugno's unjust behavior in an interview. In addition to this incident, Bobby Solo also came into the spotlight, as he could only sing in playback due to a sore throat , which was actually not allowed. Solo's record company did not want to leave the advertising platform Sanremo unused, which is why it was decided that his contribution Una lacrima sul viso should not be considered for the final evaluation.
In 1964, the new voting system stipulated that 50% of the 20 polling juries spread across the country were made up of minors (<25 years of age). In addition, the jury was completely abolished. Accordingly, the average age of the finalists was relatively low and greats like Claudio Villa, Tony Renis and Milva were eliminated early. While the prognoses now envisaged Ogni volta (Roby Ferrante / Gene Pitney) and Che me ne importa… a me (Domenico Modugno / Frankie Laine) as contenders for victory, Gigliola Cinquetti's Non ho l'età (per amarti) was surprising and the Belgian Patricia Carli prevail - much to the displeasure of Modugno, who immediately disapproved of the winning song, but to the delight of Minas , who was in the audience and had foreseen the victory. Cinquetti still holds the record as the youngest winner of the Sanremo Festival.

successes
Compared to previous years, the songs of this festival were very successful, eleven of the twelve finalists subsequently reached the top 15 of the single charts. While Quando vedrai la mia ragazza reached the charts in both versions, only Come potrei dimenticarti (Dallara / King) missed the charts. E se domani , which did not reach the final, was brought into the charts by Mina the following year .
The most successful was Bobby Solo's Una lacrima sul viso , but the winning song Non ho l'età was even more popular thanks to Cinquetti's repeated victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 .
