The 28th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1978 from January 26th to 28th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Maria Giovanna Elmi , Beppe Grillo , Stefania Casini and Vittorio Salvetti .
procedure
After the press had declared the festival practically dead and the Rai decided to suspend radio broadcasts for the first two evenings and only broadcast the finale, the 1978 festival got off to a difficult start. But Vittorio Salvetti, who was in charge of the organization for the third time in a row, was not intimidated by this. The number of participants was increased to 15, the moderation was divided between Maria Giovanna Elmi (as in the previous year), Beppe Grillo , Stefania Casini and Salvetti personally.
The participants were divided into three categories, namely solo performers, groups and cantautori . The band Krisma was disqualified at the last moment, as it turned out that their contribution was not unpublished; so in the end only 14 participants entered the race. Best known among the participants was the band Matia Bazar , who had already been in the race the previous year and dominated the hit parade in early 1978 with Solo tu . The participation of the Calabrian Cantautore Rino Gaetano caused a stir . During the festival, debutante Anna Oxa was also able to make a name for herself. She performed with a song by Ivano Fossati and attracted attention with her punky appearance.
All 14 entries reached the final, where five were eliminated after an initial vote. Then a winner was determined for each category, and the one with the most votes was declared the overall winner of the festival. In the end, Matia Bazar won ahead of Anna Oxa and Rino Gaetano.
