The 18th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from February 1st to 3rd in the municipal casino in Sanremo in 1968 and was moderated by Pippo Baudo and Luisa Rivelli .
procedure
The organization of the festival also took over in 1968 Gianni Ravera and after five years with Mike Bongiorno was Pippo Baudo his debut as a presenter Sanremo. While the authorities did everything possible to suppress the memory of Luigi Tenco's suicide during the last edition, in response there was an anonymous bomb threat to avenge Tenco's death. However, the threat remained. In advance, a jury, in which u. a. Renzo Arbore was represented, selecting 24 songs for the competition. Although Don Backy had two songs in the competition, he was not allowed to interpret any of them himself due to the intervention of Adriano Celentano , in whose publishing house the songs were published; Celentano and Backy had previously fallen out. Domenico Modugno, on the other hand, was ultimately assigned to Tony Renis after the jury had rejected his own entry Meraviglioso , among other things because the text played with suicidal thoughts, which would have been too reminiscent of Tenco.
The established stars of this festival were, besides Celentano, Renis and Modugno, Milva , Little Tony , Ornella Vanoni , Iva Zanicchi , Gigliola Cinquetti , Johnny Dorelli , Pino Donaggio and Sergio Endrigo . The international field of participants was 1968 a. a. from the Brazilian Roberto Carlos , the American jazz legend Louis Armstrong , the soul musician Wilson Pickett , the Briton Shirley Bassey , as well as Paul Anka and Dionne Warwick . Also Udo Jürgens was represented (for the second time after 1965). Giusy Romeo, who later became known as Giuni Russo , made her debut as the winner of the Castrocaro Festival . Another important debut was that of Al Bano , who already had a number one hit. Also Massimo Ranieri made his debut this year.
On the first evening, Marisa Sannia and Ornella Vanoni with Casa bianca and Wilma Goich and Dino with Gli occhi miei were successful. The second evening was all about Louis Armstrong: after his performance of Mi va di cantare , instead of leaving the stage, he began with another song. The performance had to be canceled by moderator Pippo Baudo. The hits of the evening were Canzone per te by Sergio Endrigo and Roberto Carlos, Canzone by Celentano and Milva, La tramontana by Gianni Pettenati and Antoine and Quando m'innamoro by Anna Identici and The Sandpipers .
In the final Celentano caused a stir when he the technician, who hired him the microphone stand, a tip was, and on the stage a cigar lit. Before the results were announced, Louis Armstrong also had a jam session with Lionel Hampton . The victory finally went to Canzone per te , ahead of Casa Bianca and Canzone .
