Colleiteiro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Colleiteiro is a winemaker in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia , who is characterized by the fact that he produces a maximum of 600 hectoliters of wine per year from his own grapes in his winery .

This Colleiteiro, a traditional figure of the Galician agricultural landscape, has developed a lot over time in the production of its wines. The preservation of tradition is combined with the latest achievements of the latest technologies for wine production. In the majority of the Colleiteiros' wineries, it is the winemaker who independently controls the entire production cycle: from the care of the vines, the winemaking, bottling and, ultimately, the marketing.

features

A Colleiteiro can only make wine from its own grapes. He is not allowed to buy grapes or wine in order to increase his own production.

A Colleiteiro can produce a maximum of 60,000 liters of wine a year.

A Colleiteiro can sell his grapes or wine to other wineries and / or market them under his own brand.

legislation

A decree of the Galician Provincial Government from 2007, which regulates the qualitative geographical cultivation areas of the food sector and their control councils, and in the Galician Law Gazette (DOG) of January 29, 2007 states:

“In the growing areas, where there is a specific list that recognizes the figure of the Colleiteiros as small producers who transform their crops themselves, they can have an independent and independent representation vis-à-vis the other sectors without this breaking the parity of forces , due to their dual position as winemaker and manufacturer. In this case the Colleiteiros are not allowed to participate in the elections of the winemakers or producers. "

The Colleiteiro in the DO Ribeiro

Only the Ribeiro growing area , the oldest in Galicia, currently recognizes the figure of the Colleiteiros in its statutes. Article 17.1 on the register of wineries states:

"All those wineries are registered that are in the production zone and carry out some of the activities such as production, storage and / or bottling of the wines that come from registered vines and are therefore entitled to the designation Ribeiro growing area (DO Ribeiro) to use. Within this register, a second one is listed only for the Colleiteiros wineries. This includes those who generate less than 600 hl per year from their own vines. "

In the 2015 vintage, 72 Colleiteiros were registered in the DO Ribeiro.

There is a professional association of Colleiteiros, the Asociación de Colleiteiros Embotelladores do Ribeiro , in which only wineries can become members that only bottle and market their own wine from their own grapes.
