The 21st edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in the municipal casino in Sanremo from February 25 to 27 in 1971 and was moderated by Carlo Giuffré and Elsa Martinelli .
procedure
As in the previous year, Ezio Radaelli and Gianni Ravera were in charge of organizing the festival in 1971 . Due to the financial burden, three record companies (Durium, Fonit Cetra and Phonogram) stayed away from the event this year, which is why some big names were not available to participate. Sergio Endrigo , actually also affected, then took part at his own expense. The number of contributions fell from 26 to 24, in the finale it remained at 14. Each song was performed as usual in two versions.
The most prominent participants of this year, alongside Endrigo, were Domenico Modugno , Gigliola Cinquetti , Don Backy , Caterina Caselli , Little Tony and Pino Donaggio . In addition, last year's winner Adriano Celentano took part for the fifth and last time, apparently without taking the competition particularly seriously. José Feliciano made his debut among the international participants, alongside Mungo Jerry , Ray Conniff and the Belgian band Wallace Collection . Not many of the Italian newcomers had a career after the festival; Exceptions were the band Formula 3, produced by Lucio Battisti , and the Nomadi (still barely noticed at the festival) .
The stars of the first evening were José Feliciano, Donatello and Caterina Caselli, Che sarà became the favorite. As in the previous year, several participants tried to score points with show elements during the performance, but this year it did not help Rosanna Fratello (with a choreography with four tap dancers ), Mungo Jerry (with a blonde girl as an accessory) or Antoine (who floated away from the performance on a rope) during qualification. The favorites of the second evening were Il cuore è uno zingaro , 4 March 1943 and 13, storia d'oggi .
In the final, Celentano also tried a show performance with accordion, banjo and guitar, but in the end it was only enough for fifth place. It won Il cuore è uno zingaro before Che sarà without any major surprises . The third-placed 4 marzo 1943 won a special prize for the most beautiful text and subsequently proved to be the most commercially successful song in this Sanremo edition; for Lucio Dalla it was the breakthrough.
