The eleventh edition of the festival Italian Song Sanremo found in 1961 from 26 to 28 January and 6 February in urban casino in Sanremo and were attended by Lilly Lembo and Giuliana Calandra moderated.
procedure
While the organization of the festival remained with Ezio Radaelli , both the moderator duo (for the first time two women came to the train) and the conductors were changed: Gianfranco Intra and Bruno Canfora led the orchestras on the first three evenings, Enzo Ceragioli and Piero Soffici on the last evening . The number of permitted contributions was increased to 24, these were interpreted by 42 singers - among them again Mina and Tony Dallara , but now for example Adriano Celentano , Gino Paoli , Giorgio Gaber , Pino Donaggio , Milva , Tony Renis , Umberto Bindi , Edoardo Vianello and Luciano Tajoli . Gino Latilla , Tonina Torrielli , Teddy Reno , Carla Boni , Aurelio Fierro and Achille Togliani returned to the festival as representatives of tradition .
Mina and Gino Paoli enjoyed the greatest popularity with the public and the press at the beginning of the festival, both of whom had already landed several successful hits in Italy. Adriano Celentano, who had to obtain special permission from Defense Minister Giulio Andreotti for temporary exemption from military service , and Milva attracted a great deal of attention .
This year, a new voting system was introduced with the intention of making the competition more transparent: After the juries, as usual, allowed half of the contributions presented in two versions for the final on the first two evenings, after the final evening, still no decision made, the VotoFestival , a week-long voting period during which anyone over the 100 lire expensive Enalotto (one the bills Toto similar competition) could be given up to six votes for the twelve finalists of the festival. Only after the votes had been counted was the final score announced on an additional evening. There, Al di là was able to prevail against favored competitors in the interpretation of Betty Curtis and Luciano Tajoli .
While Mina withdrew from the festival after various reviews and the relatively poor performance of her songs, Milva and Celentano in particular were able to use it as a career springboard.

successes
Already in the voting week Celentanos sold 24,000 baci the strongest of all entries and even after the festival he was only (surprisingly) overtaken by Donaggio's Come sinfonia . Several songs were noted in the charts in both versions, including the winning title. Only two of the final entries missed the top 20 of the charts, namely Febbre di musica (Testa / Torrielli) and Lei (Cigliano / Sentieri).
Betty Curtis also presented Al di là at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 and was able to achieve fifth place (out of 15).
