The fifth edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1955 from January 27th to 29th in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Armando Pizzo and Maria Teresa Ruta .

Procedure and innovations

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

In 1955, the festival experienced a number of innovations: the event was broadcast on television for the first time (also in Eurovision in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland), which is why Nunzio Filogamo , who is considered to be less telegenic, no longer moderated for the first time Duo Armando Pizzo and Maria Teresa Ruta was replaced. The pre-selection of the songs submitted (412 in number) was no longer carried out by the RAI itself, but by an independent commission made up of people from the literature, music and film industry. The orchestra of Cinico Angelini , which was there from the start, was replaced by the orchestra Canzoni e Ritmi by Francesco Ferrari.

The field of participants also changed a lot, as a new rule stipulated that singers were allowed to take part at most once; 13 of the 15 participants had their first appearance in Sanremo in 1955, including the already very popular Claudio Villa . Only Gianni Ravera and Natalino Otto had already participated in the previous year. The competition rules remained unchanged, although the number of songs was reduced to a total of 16. As usual, these were presented in two versions on the first two evenings and evaluated by the large jury; eight songs made it to the final.

Favorite Claudio Villa, who was represented in the final with all three songs, was hit by the flu on the last evening and could not leave his hotel room, which is why the record was played in the hall instead. This is considered to be the first case of playback at the Sanremo Festival. In the final vote, Villas Buongiorno tristezza (alternatively sung by Tullio Pane ) then landed in first place, while his other two contributions took second and fourth place.
