The first edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in the municipal casino in Sanremo from January 29th to 31st in 1951 and was moderated by Nunzio Filogamo .

Background and process

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

In order to promote tourism in Sanremo after 1945 , a commission chaired by Amilcare Rambaldi proposed the organization of a music festival. The decisive initiative came a few years later from the director of public radio, Giulio Razzi . The festival was intended as a song competition to which all music publishers could submit contributions. From 240 submissions, 20 songs were selected, which were performed by three performers from the ranks of the state broadcaster RAI in the course of the festival in front of the audience in the municipal casino : Nilla Pizzi , Achille Togliani and the Duo Fasano , consisting of the sisters Dina and Delfina Fasano . Two orchestras led by Cinico Angelini accompanied the singers.

The participating songs were divided into two groups. The first group was performed on Monday and the second on Tuesday, ten songs each evening. Five songs on both evenings qualified for the final on Wednesday. So in the end ten finalists had to decide who would win the first Sanremo Festival. The ranking list was determined by the audience in the hall. The radio station Rete Rossa broadcast all appearances live, but did not announce the winner's title. The winner, Nilla Pizzi, only received a bouquet of flowers and an extraordinary fee of 30,000 lire .
