The 70th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 2020 from February 4th to 8th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Amadeus .

The winner of the competition was Diodato with the song Fai rumore .

organization

General

The festival was organized by Italy's public broadcaster Rai . Amadeus moderated the festival for the first time and was also the artistic director ( direttore artistico ) of the event. At his side there were different comedians every evening: Diletta Leotta , Rula Jebreal , Emma D'Aquino , Laura Chimenti , Sabrina Salerno , Georgina Rodríguez , Alketa Vejsiu , Antonella Clerici , Francesca Sofia Novello and Mara Venier . He was also accompanied by the comedian Fiorello and the singer Tiziano Ferro as returning guests. Leonardo de Amicis was responsible for the musical direction ( direzione musicale ) , the stage equipment was by Gaetano Catelli and directed by Stefano Vicario .

Press room

The press room ( Sala Stampa ) is the name of the jury made up of accredited radio and TV journalists, whose vote on the last three evenings made up 33% of the rating.

Demoscopic jury

The demoscopic jury ( giuria demoscopica ) is a sample of 300 randomly selected music consumers who vote from home using an electronic system. She voted every evening and made up 33% of the rating.

Preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest

A new clause has been introduced in the rules for the Sanremo Festival 2020, which states that all participants must determine in advance whether they want to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 if they win . If the winner has denied participation, the Rai reserves the right to select a participant from the main category who has previously confirmed that he wants to compete in the ESC.

Amadeus announced 22 participants on December 31, 2019 in an interview with the daily La Repubblica . Another two participants and the titles of all contributions were presented on January 6, 2020 in the television program I soliti ignoti . Bugo and Morgan were in the running with Sincero , but were disqualified on the fourth evening after breaking the rules.

    This year, the field of participants in the newcomer category consisted of the five finalists of the Sanremo Giovani competition , two of the finalists of the Area Sanremo competition (Matteo Faustini; Gabriella Martinelli and Lula) and the winner of the talent show Sanremo Young (Tecla). The Sanremo Giovani final took place on December 19, 2019 at the Sanremo Casino and was broadcast on Rai 1 ; the result was determined by a television jury (consisting of Piero Chiambretti , Pippo Baudo , Antonella Clerici , Carlo Conti and Gigi D'Alessio ), a polling jury, a music commission and a televoting.

    On the first evening, twelve of the 24 candidates appeared. On the basis of the vote by the opinion polling jury, a provisional ranking list was drawn up at the end of the evening. Four of the eight newcomers also competed in pairs; the demoscopic jury selected the two winners of the duels.

    In the main category, the 24 candidates reappeared with their contributions on the fourth evening. After a vote in the press room, a new ranking was created.

    In addition, the remaining four newcomers competed against each other again in pairs; the two finalists were determined by a combined vote by the demoscopic jury (33%), press room (33%) and televoting (34%). In the final round, the winning entry was chosen with the same voting mechanism.

    The evening's co-presenters were Antonella Clerici and Francesca Sofia Novello .

    Fifth evening

    During the final evening, all 24 candidates appeared for the last time. The polling jury (33%), the press room (33%) and televoting (34%) were again entitled to vote. The results of all evenings were summed up and gave the final score. The three best placed came into the final round, from which the winning contribution was determined with the same voting system but without taking into account the previous votes.

    The evening's co-presenters were Mara Venier , Diletta Leotta , Sabrina Salerno and Francesca Sofia Novello .

    Dopofestival

    The traditional talk show Dopofestival , which takes place every evening after the festival, was broadcast this year under the title L'altro Festival exclusively as a live stream on RaiPlay . It took place in the Palafiori of Sanremo and was moderated by Nicola Savino , with the participation of Myss Keta , Gemelli di Guidonia, Valerio Lundini and Eddy Anselmi.
