The 31st edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1981 from 5th to 7th February at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Claudio Cecchetto , Eleonora Vallone and Nilla Pizzi .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

After the great success of the 30th edition of the festival, the Rai decided to broadcast all three evenings of the event, but the first two with a time delay. The organization remained with Gianni Ravera , the moderation with Claudio Cecchetto . Cecchetto was joined by the actress Eleonora Vallone (daughter of Raf Vallone ) and the first Sanremo winner Nilla Pizzi . As in the previous year, there was no orchestra and instead half playback was used. Well-known names from the film industry sat on the expert jury: Alberto Sordi , Ugo Tognazzi , Giancarlo Giannini , Eleonora Giorgi and Sergio Leone .

The 28 participants, two fewer than in the previous year, were divided into two groups. Only those from Group A had to qualify for the final, including the winners of the festival by Castrocaro Luca Barbarossa and Stefano Tosi , a participant from the television program Domenica In ( Paolo Barabani ) and the newcomers Fiorella Mannoia and Michele Zarrillo , but also more well-known characters such as Orietta Berti and Enzo Malepasso . Group B, which qualified directly for the final, included Loretta Goggi , Ricchi e Poveri or the individually competing siblings Marcella and Gianni Bella . Again several foreign participants were represented, among them the American model Sterling Saint-Jacques and the singer Tom Hooker . 20 participants reached the final.

Well-known international guests enriched the festival program in 1981: Ravera was able to win Dire Straits , Barry White , Robert Palmer , Bad Manners and Lio for performances. Moderator Cecchetto also presented a dance performance in the finale with his specially written song Gioca Jouer , accompanied by Sandy Marton , among others . A controversy arose over the planned appearance of the comedian Massimo Troisi : Since the Rai remembered the provocative appearances of Roberto Benigni from the previous year, they asked Troisi to present his three planned monologues in advance. But he refused, whereupon the Rai drastically cut the time for his performances. Troisi finally canceled his appearance at short notice. The participating band Ricchi e Poveri, whose fourth member Marina Occhiena initially separated from her colleagues in a dispute, saw itself embroiled in another scandal. However, after Occhiena forced the provisional reunion with a judicial decree on February 6th, the band rehearsed four times again on the day of the final. Only a few hours before the finale was an amicable agreement within the band and Occhiena finally withdrew.

Popular contributions from the start were Maledetta primavera by Loretta Goggi, Ancora by the young Arbore protégé Eduardo De Crescenzo and Sarà perché ti amo by Ricchi e Poveri. One of the favorites was Alice , who took part for the second time after 1972 and had a first hit the year before; however, their song Per Elisa was considered too difficult for the Sanremo Festival. Despite these doubts, Alice was finally able to take first place in front of Loretta Goggi and Dario Baldan Bembo.
