The 26th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1976 from February 19th to 21st in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Giancarlo Guardabassi .
procedure
After the flop of the previous year, the organization of the festival passed to Vittorio Salvetti, who had already been responsible for it in 1973. He introduced competition in "teams" as a new element. The 30 participants were divided into five groups, each preceded by two “team captains”; these were directly qualified for the final, while the other group members had to face the usual votes of the juries. For each team, the member with the most votes reached the final, which resulted in 15 finalists; In addition, the runners-up in each group faced a further vote, which resulted in a further three finalists.
Giancarlo Guardabassi , who was known as the speaker of a hit parade radio show, made his debut as a presenter . His radio experience was also reflected in the fact, which was unusual for the festival, that he never actively moderated on stage, but commented on the event from a seat in the stalls.
The field of participants was able to show some big names again this year: Sergio Endrigo , Ricchi e Poveri , Drupi , Peppino di Capri , Wess & Dori Ghezzi , the Camaleonti or Orietta Berti . Romina Power , who was newly married to Al Bano , made their debut , the group Albatros by Toto Cutugno , who had already gained experience as a songwriter in Sanremo in 1970, and the Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble , which had a summer hit in Italy in 1974 with Soleado . In 1976, several explicit erotic content was noticed in the participating songs, for example in Due anelli by Paolo Frescura , Gli occhi di tua madre by Sandro Giacobbe and also in Non lo faccio più by Peppino di Capri.
A number of guests appeared in the finale, including Julio Iglesias , Domenico Modugno , Rita Pavone and Erminio Macario . In the end, Peppino di Capri surprisingly won. Other contributions were more successful afterwards, although the festival had not yet found its way back to its former importance.
