Domenico Modugno

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Domenico Modugno (born January 9, 1928 in Polignano a Mare , † August 6, 1994 in Lampedusa ) was an Italian Cantautore , actor and politician. In 1958 he achieved a world hit with Nel blu dipinto di blu . As a innovator of form, style and content, he has a prominent position in the history of Italian popular music . He won the Sanremo Festival four times and took part in the Eurovision Song Contest three times for Italy .

life and career

Modugno grew up in San Pietro Vernotico and learned to play the guitar and accordion at an early age . At the age of 19 he moved to Turin , where he worked as a tire repairer in a factory. After his military service he moved on to Rome and was accepted at the film school Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . He soon got his first film and theater roles, for example in Anni facili by Luigi Zampa (1953). At the same time, Modugno turned back to music, first as a radio presenter, then as a songwriter. His first songs were in the Apulian, Sicilian and Napoletan dialects, including Lu pisce spada , La sveglietta , La donna riccia , Strada 'nfosa or Io, mammeta e tu . He first attracted attention with the song Lazzarella , which was interpreted by Modugno and Aurelio Fierro and won the Festival di Napoli .

Together with Johnny Dorelli , Modugno presented the song Nel blu dipinto di blu (Volare) , which he had written with Franco Migliacci , at the 1958 Sanremo Festival . The song was an overwhelming success, won the competition and was later also entered in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 , where Modugno took third place. The song also became a number one hit in the USA and won both main categories, single of the year and song of the year , at the 1959 Grammy Awards .

On this wave of success, Modugno (again with Dorelli) took part in the Sanremo Festival in 1959 and won again with Piove (ciao, ciao, bambina) . As in the previous year, he presented the song at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1959 , where he finished sixth this time. Other popular songs Modugnos at this time were Vecchio frack , Notte lunga notte and Pasqualino marajà . In 1959 he also had a role in the film The Greatest Show of the Night by Alessandro Blasetti , in 1960 in Adua and her companions by Antonio Pietrangeli . With Libero , Modugno took second place at the Sanremo Festival in 1960 (only behind Claudio Villa ), and the single Notte di luna calante was also successful. In 1961 Modugno played a leading role in the musical theater Rinaldo in campo by Garinei and Giovannini , for which he had also written the music, a role in the film The Last Judgment Will Not Happen by Vittorio De Sica , and was successful with Giovane amore and La novia .

Now together with Claudio Villa, Modugno won the Sanremo Festival for the third time in 1962 with Addio… addio… . Other successes of the year were his singles Selene and Stasera pago io . In musical theater Tommaso d'Amalfi by Eduardo De Filippo , he took again a major role. The success of the year was the single Lettera di un soldato . In 1963 he directed the autobiographical film Tutto è musica . In 1964 he returned to the Sanremo Festival with Che me ne importa… a me and in the same year he also won the Festival di Napoli with the song Tu si '' na cosa grande . In 1965 he played the leading role in the television film Scaramouche by Daniele D'Anza and wrote the score for it.

Modugno achieved a fourth victory at the Sanremo Festival in 1966 with Dio, come ti amo , together with Gigliola Cinquetti . However, he had no luck with it at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1966 , where he finished last with zero points. Modugno also took part in Sanremo in the following years, 1967 with Sopra i tetti azzurri del mio pazzo amore , 1968 with Il posto mio , 1970 with La lontananza , 1971 with Come stai? and 1972 with Un calcio alla città . 1968 Modugno played in mood in Italian by Pier Paolo Pasolini with 1972 in diabolical game of Luigi Comencini . Between 1973 and 1975 he played in an Italian production of the Threepenny Opera by Giorgio Strehler Mackie Messer , in 1974 he entered the race for the last time in Sanremo with the song Questa è la mia vita . He was still successful in 1975 with Piange il telefono and in 1976 with Il maestro di violino ; in this year he also appeared as a guest again in Sanremo. He repeated this in 1977, he also appeared in the play Don Giovanni in Sicilia , and in 1978 in the musical comedy Cyrano .

In 1984 Modugno suffered a stroke . After that he was only able to perform to a limited extent; In 1986 he joined the Partito Radicale , became party leader and represented the party from 1987 to 1990 in the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament. In 1991 his condition worsened again, in 1993 he recorded one last song with his son Massimo Modugno , Delfini . In 1994 he died on Lampedusa .
