The eighth edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place from January 30th to February 1st in the municipal casino in Sanremo in 1958 and was moderated by Gianni Agus and Fulvia Colombo .

Innovations and procedure

Conductor Alberto Semprini and winner Domenico Modugno (here at the Eurovision Song Contest)

The biggest innovation in 1958 was that the RAI had withdrawn from organizing the event and it was now hosted directly by Azienda Turistico Alberghiera (ATA), the operating company of the casino. However, as usual, RAI broadcast the festival live on television and radio. The young actor Gianni Agus and the popular RAI presenter Fulvia Colombo took over the moderation. Otherwise, most of the rules and the participants stayed the same, the two conductors Cinico Angelini and Alberto Semprini were there again.

Nilla Pizzi , winner of the first two editions of the festival, returned as a participant, and Claudio Villa , also two-time winner , was represented with five songs. In addition to Pizzi and Villa, Aurelio Fierro , who had already gained popularity in the USA and now competed with a total of six songs, and the newcomer Johnny Dorelli were favorites. Domenico Modugno , who first took part in the festival as a songwriter in 1956, caused a sensation because this time he was the first participant to perform a song he had written himself.

The competition followed the usual scheme: On the first two evenings, half of the songs were presented in two versions, so that the jury vote finally qualified ten songs for the final evening. There the song Nel blu dipinto di blu in the interpretation of Modugno and Dorelli prevailed, while Nilla Pizzi took second and third place with more traditional songs.

successes

The 1958 festival caused record sales to boom: Modugno's musically innovative Nel blu dipinto di blu , mostly known as Volare , was a worldwide hit, reached third place at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 , and was able to make it to the top (as the only Italian song to date) one of the US charts and was awarded two Grammy Awards . In the wake of this undreamt-of success, other songs in this year's competition also sold better than any other Sanremo contribution before. Last but not least, Nilla Pizzi was also able to win the first edition of the RAI competition Canzonissima with the second-placed song L'edera . Overall, the interest of the public and the press increased enormously by 1958.
