The 33rd edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1983 from February 3rd to 5th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Andrea Giordana together with Anna Pettinelli , Isabel Russinova and Emanuela Falcetti .
procedure
In 1983 Gianni Ravera, again responsible for organizing the festival, increased the number of participants to 36 - a new record. As before, they were divided into two groups, with all of the 18 “Big” reaching the final, while only eight of the 18 “Giovani” (newcomers). Due to the polemics surrounding Claudio Villa in the previous year, Ravera now opted for a new, more transparent composition of the juries: In 60 municipalities in Italy, a jury of 20 people was formed under the direction of the municipal secretary. The actor Andrea Giordana was chosen for the moderation, who was assisted by the moderation trio of the program Discoring , consisting of Anna Pettinelli , Emanuela Falcetti and Isabel Russinova .
After half playback had become the rule in previous years , this year the labels demanded full playback. After a protest by the municipality of Sanremo, the participants were finally free to choose whether they wanted to sing live or not. The Rai sparked further controversy when they banned the photographers from the theater ground floor, whereupon they went on strike. As an experiment, the Totip voting, parallel to that of the juries, was carried out for the first time this year : viewers throughout Italy could cast votes for Sanremo entries using the tickets from the Totip prediction game (developed for horse betting ). The system proved its worth and was introduced the following year as the festival's official voting procedure.
Among the participants were two previous winners: Toto Cutugno (1980) and Matia Bazar (1978). Other representatives of the main category were Dori Ghezzi , who appeared at the festival accompanied by her partner Fabrizio De André ; the television presenter Barbara Boncompagni ; Rock star Vasco Rossi on his second attempt; Gianni Morandi with a comeback attempt; as well as three international singers, Bertín Osborne (Spain), Amii Stewart (USA) and Richard Sanderson (Scotland). In the newcomer category, Giorgia Fiorio , daughter of Formula 1 official Cesare Fiorio , received a lot of attention, and Amedeo Minghi also attracted attention, but did not make it to the final; in addition, Zucchero tried a second time, although he had more success as a writer (he was involved in four other songs in the competition), and the duo of Franco Battiato and Giusto Pio sent another song two years after the victory with Per Elisa into the race, this time sung by the newcomer Sibilla , but without reaching the final.
As in previous years, Ravera attached great importance to prominent, international guests. 1983 included Peter Gabriel , John Denver , Toquinho , Frida ( ABBA ), KC and the Sunshine Band and Ph.D. Comedian Roberto Benigni also returned to present his directorial debut Tu mi turbi , and Pippo Franco was again a guest and presented a new song.
This year the final also included a final round, in which the top three from both categories moved in. To everyone's surprise, the newcomer Tiziana Rivale came out on top with the song Sarà quel che sarà , ahead of Donatella Milani (another newcomer) and Dori Ghezzi. For songwriter Maurizio Fabrizio it was the second win in a row. The critic's award went to Vacanze romane by Matia Bazar, fourth place overall. In the unofficial Totip audience classification, the results of which Pippo Baudo announced the day after the final, the fifth-placed Toto Cutugno and L'italiano won ahead of Gianni Morandi and the newcomer Giorgia Fiorio.
