The 41st edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1991 from February 27th to March 2nd at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Andrea Occhipinti and Edwige Fenech .
procedure
Adriano Aragozzini , also artistic director of the festival in 1991, kept the successful concept of the previous year: 20 participants in the main category, with 20 international guests who presented the contributions in a second version out of competition; 16 participants in the newcomer category. The event returned to the Ariston Theater after the exception in 1990. Since the orchestra (with 44 instrumentalists and eight singers) was now an integral part of the festival again, it was difficult to reallocate the space on the theater stage after years of playback . The actors Andrea Occhipinti and Edwige Fenech were hired as moderator duo .
The shadow of the Second Gulf War , in which Italian troops were also involved, hovered over the festival. At the opening, two children let a dove fly as a symbol of peace on the first evening . Some of the planned international participants canceled their participation due to the global security situation, including the Bee Gees , Stevie Wonder , Al Jarreau and The Manhattan Transfer . Grace Jones , Gloria Gaynor , Ute Lemper and Ofra Haza could be won as replacements at short notice . There was also only one additional international guest planned, namely Rod Stewart ; his appearance was canceled at short notice after a dispute with Aragozzini.
The field of participants again included many well-known names, including primarily Riccardo Cocciante and Renato Zero , but also Enzo Jannacci , Pierangelo Bertoli , Umberto Tozzi , Raf , Fiordaliso , Al Bano & Romina Power , Amedeo Minghi and Mietta . Marco Masini , last year's winner of the newcomer, aroused people's spirits with his contribution Perché lo fai on drug addiction : although it was a hit with the public, it was the subject of harsh criticism in the press. In the newcomer category, the debutant Paolo Vallesi was able to prevail with the song Le persone inutili . The band Timoria did not make it to the final of the newcomers, but were awarded the critics award for L'uomo che ride .
In the final, the favorite was once again able to prevail: Riccardo Cocciante with Se stiamo insieme (second version : I'm Missing You by Sarah Jane Morris ). The audience in the hall showed clear preferences for the runner-up, Renato Zero with Spalle al muro (second version : Still Life by Grace Jones). Masini (second version: Just Tell Me Why by Dee Dee Bridgewater ) landed in third place. The critical award in the main category, however, went to Enzo Jannacci's La fotografia (second version: Photograph by Ute Lemper).
