The 46th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1996 from February 20th to 24th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Pippo Baudo with Valeria Mazza and Sabrina Ferilli .

In 1996, seven finalists from the previous year's newcomer category were again given the opportunity to take part in the main category, with only four of them qualifying for the final, alongside the 16 regular participants (including the Neri per Caso group as the newcomer winner 1995 belonged). The newcomer category 1996, however, was reduced from 16 out of 14 participants, but there were no eliminations. Pippo Baudo , who again combined the roles of moderator and artistic director, this time brought Valeria Mazza and Sabrina Ferilli to act as co-presenters.

The field of participants consisted of former winners ( Riccardo Fogli , Luca Barbarossa , Aleandro Baldi , Amedeo Minghi , Giorgia and Enrico Ruggeri ), established stars ( Ron and Umberto Bindi ) and protagonists of the younger years ( Spagna , Paola Turci , Michele Zarrillo and Paolo Vallesi ) together. Ornella Vanoni's participation was originally planned, but she was disqualified in favor of Enrico Ruggeri because her contribution turned out to be plagiarism in the sense of the festival rules. Al Bano returned as a soloist for the first time after breaking up with Romina Power (with whom he had won in 1984). The satirical band Elio e le Storie Tese made their debut at the festival . Baudo had again invited a large number of international star guests: Bruce Springsteen , Cher , Blur , Tina Turner , East 17 , Céline Dion , Vanessa-Mae , Simply Red , Take That , Kelly Family , Bon Jovi , Michael Bolton , The Cranberries and Alanis Morissette .

Carmen Consoli drew attention to herself among the newcomers, and Marina Rei won the critical award with Al di là di questi anni . It eventually won Syria with Non ci sto . In the main category, Al Bano was celebrated by the audience in the hall with È la mia vita , but it only ended up in seventh place. In the end, Ron (together with Tosca ) and Vorrei incontrarti fra cent'anni prevailed with a narrow margin ahead of Elio e le Storie Tese (La terra dei cachi) and Giorgia (Strano il mio destino) ; the critic's award went to Elio e le Storie Tese. In retrospect, the Carabinieri investigated irregularities in the counting of votes, which could not identify any misconduct on the part of the Rai, but left considerable doubts as to the correctness of the final result.
