The 47th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1997 from February 18th to 23rd at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno , Piero Chiambretti and Valeria Marini .
procedure
After Pippo Baudo left the Rai , the responsibility for organizing the 1997 festival remained with Mario Maffucci ; This transferred the artistic direction to a separate commission, in which Pino Donaggio , Giorgio Moroder and Carla Vistarini sat. Mike Bongiorno returned as moderator after 18 years , with Valeria Marini and Piero Chiambretti at his side . The talk show Dopofestival was presented by Bruno Vespa .
Despite the new staff, the rules of the previous years were stuck to: The finalists of the Newcomer category 1996 (this time all 14) were allowed to compete in the main category, with five qualifying for the final; the 1996 newcomer winner Syria was automatically qualified. Among the regular participants were six former winners, namely Anna Oxa , Fausto Leali , Toto Cutugno , Al Bano , Tosca and Massimo Ranieri . Two other big names were Patty Pravo and Loredana Bertè . Nek first appeared in the main category. Alex Baroni and Niccolò Fabi drew attention to themselves among the newcomers, and rapper Caparezza made his debut under the pseudonym Mikimix .
In the newcomer category, the duo Paola & Chiara finally came out on top with the song Amici come prima , the critic's award went to Niccolò Fabi with Capelli . Patty Pravo received the critics' award in the main category, but landed with … E dimmi che non vuoi morire only in eighth place overall. The duo Jalisse , who debuted relatively unnoticed in the newcomer category in 1996, finally won the festival with Fiumi di parole , ahead of Anna Oxa (Storie) and Syria (Sei tu) .

successes
The successes in the competition did not carry over to the charts: The most successful here was the seventh-placed Nek, who also landed a hit outside of Italy with Laura non c'è . The winner of the Critics' Prize Patty Pravo and Carmen Consoli, who left early, were also successful.
Jalisse was able to present his winning contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 again and achieved fourth place for Italy. Fiumi di parole should mark the last Italian ESC participation until the return in 2011.
