Caparezza [kapaˈrɛttsa] is the stage name of Michele Salvemini (born October 9, 1973 in Molfetta , Apulia ). He is a popular Italian hip hopper . In his texts, political and socially critical content is processed in a humorous way.

Life

Beginnings

Michele Salvemini started his career under the name Mikimix . He took part in the preliminary round of Sanremo Giovani in 1995 with the song Succede solo nei film and a year later with the song Donne in minigonne and finally with the song E la notte se ne va at the 1997 Sanremo Festival in the Newcomer category. The latter brought him attention beyond the borders of Italy and reached number 19 in the French and number 34 in the Swedish charts . These three songs are included in his first album La mia buona stella , which was released by Sony Music in 1997 and, despite the name (dt. My good star ), was not very successful.

Under his current stage name Caparezza (which means "curly hair" in the dialect of his hometown Molfetta) he published the demos Ricomincio da Capa , Con Caparezza ... nella monnezza and Zappa in 1999 . In 2000, Virgin Records released his first album Caparezza ?! , from which four singles were released, including the song La fitta sassaiola dell'ingiuria sung with Angelo Branduardi .

successes

He made his breakthrough with Verità supposte , whose singles Fuori dal tunnel and Vengo dalla Luna became summer hits in Italy in 2004. In total, the album was sold over 100,000 times and received a platinum record and two gold records with the released singles and was also awarded the Premio Lunezia della Critica .

His third album Habemus Capa , an allusion to Habemus papam ( We have a Pope ), was released on March 23, 2006 on Virgin Records. It reached fifth place in the Italian charts and was sold over 40,000 times by the end of May, which is why Caparezza received its third gold record. In his Habemus Capa Tour 2006 he performed around 100 times across Italy.

In April 2008, Rizzoli published his first book, Saghe mentali . It is divided into four parts, each related to one of his albums: The first in the form of a diary with ?! , the second, a collection of fables, with Verità supposte , the third part, laid out according to Hell by Dante Alighieri , with Habemus Capa and the fourth with his fourth album Le dimensioni del mio caos , which was also released in April 2008. From Caparezza as fonoromanzo means a portmanteau word from FON ( Phon -) and fotoromanzo ( Photo Roman ), it was awarded a gold record.

With the fifth album, Il sogno eretico , Caparezza reached 2nd place in the Italian music charts in 2011. The released single Goodbye Malinconia was recorded with Tony Hadley , singer of the Spandau Ballet . At the same time, EMI released the first compilation Epocalisse: Capalogia da ?! al caos . The live album Esecuzione pubblica was released in 2012, followed in 2014 by the next studio album Museica , which topped the album charts for the first time. The rapper was able to repeat this success in 2017 with Prisoner 709 .

Promoter of local music

As he himself emphasizes, Caparezza's music is influenced by Frank Zappa . In addition to his music career, he supports up-and-coming Apulian bands. He is also a member of the dialect singing group Sunny Cola Connection ; their album Alla molfettesa manera was recorded in 2005 and can be downloaded for free from the official website.
