Angelo Branduardi
Angelo Branduardi (born February 12, 1950 in Cuggiono near Milan ) is an internationally known Italian musician and cantautore . As a Cantautore located near the Genoese School, Branduardi combines early music with traditional folk music and presents itself stylistically as menestrello ( Ménestrel ), inspired by the Celtic and Northern European tradition.
Life
Origin and education
Angelo Branduardi was born in 1950 in Cuggiono, west of Milan . A few months after his birth, the family moved to Genoa , where he obtained his violin diploma from the Conservatorio Niccolò Paganini di Genova . At the age of 15, the family moved to Milan, where he eventually enrolled in the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Milan . During this time Branduardi began to set his own poems and those of his favorite lyricists to music and to sing along with the guitar.
Style and Influences
His lyrics, mostly written by or together with his wife Luisa Zappa , are often adaptations and translations of old poems, sagas , fairy tales , as well as texts from Jewish tradition. For example, the song Alla fiera dell'est / Highdown Fair (1976) is an adaptation of the Jewish Passover song Chad gadja . Sotto il tiglio / Under the Lime Tree (1976) in turn leads Under the linden of Minne poet Walther von der Vogelweide on. In his compositions Branduardi often draws on traditional folk songs and works of early music. For example, the melody of Ballo in fa diesis minore is based on the piece Schiarazula Marazula from the collection Il primo libro de 'balli by the Renaissance composer Giorgio Mainerio from the 16th century. The song Donna ti voglio cantare is also based on a composition by Pierre Attaignant from the same musical era. Vocally, Branduardi, like his musical role model Cat Stevens, is particularly successful as a ballad interpreter. He plays many instruments on his albums himself: violin (his first instrument), various flutes and guitars , lute , dulcimer etc.
Career
In 1974 Paul Buckmaster produced his debut album Angelo Branduardi , which, however, went unnoticed. The great success came between 1977 and 1979 with the albums Alla fiera dell'est , La pulce d'acqua and Cogli la prima mela , which also made him internationally known. In Germany, Branduardi was initially an insider tip in the songwriting scene until his song La pulce d'acqua (“The Water Flea ”) became a radio hit in 1979 , also triggered by Branduardi's European tour as part of the La Carovana del Mediterraneo project . His most successful album in Germany is Cogli la prima mela (1/80 D-LP 12). Some of Branduardi's albums were published in English translation (texts: Peter Sinfield and Keith Christmas ) and in French translation (texts: Etienne Roda-Gil ). Five English-language and eight French-language album versions have been released. In 1985 Branduardi could be heard in the benefit project MusicaItalia per l'Etiopia .
After three soundtracks in the 1980s (including " Momo ", 1985 based on Michael Ende , director: Johannes Schaaf ), Branduardi turned to more down-to-earth sounds in the 90s and finally to Irish folk ( Il dito e la luna, 1998). In the Futuro Antico project (“Alte Zukunft”, eight albums so far from 1996 to 2014) he presents himself as an interpreter of mainly Italian Renaissance music. His album L'infinitamente piccolo , released in 2000, is dedicated to Saint Francis and contains 11 songs based on Franciscan sources.
From January 2014 Branduardi presented as part of his church tour Germany 2014 together with a multi-percussionist and his guitar companion, Maurizio Fabrizio , excerpts from his complete works, especially his early works, as well as songs from the current studio album Il Rovo e la Rosa . The concerts took place in churches in major German cities.
In 2013 Branduardi appeared on the songs for the first time on a summer evening , in 2016 he played there with his band for the 30th anniversary, on the CD he is represented with Alla fiera dell'est and Ballo in fa diesis minore .
