Songs on a summer evening

Songs on a Summer Evening is an annual two-day music festival that was conceived by BR moderator Ado Schlier , who, in his capacity as artistic director of the festival, is responsible for its programming. From 1987 to 2016 the festival took place on the monastery meadow in front of the Banz monastery in Bad Staffelstein . The festival has been taking place at different locations every year since 2017. The festival is one of the few events for songwriters in German-speaking countries.

Festival history

From the beginning of the festival, the venue was initially the monastery meadow in front of the Upper Franconian monastery of Banz near Bad Staffelstein . With a few exceptions, the date of the event was traditionally the first Friday and Saturday in July. Basically the same program was played on both days, the number of visitors was around 5000 per evening.

As part of the festival, the Hanns Seidel Foundation's award for young songwriters was awarded. The actual competition took place on Thursday, and the winners then appeared during the festival.

The Bayerische Rundfunk recorded the festival until 2009 and transferred annually a summary in his TV and radio program, as well as the South Tyrolean station Rai South Tyrol . From the 27th edition in 2013, Bayerischer Rundfunk again broadcast excerpts from the festival.

After 30 years, the Songs Festival took place on a summer evening on July 3, 2016 for the last time on the monastery meadow in front of Banz Monastery. Since then, changing venues have been planned. On July 7th and 8th, 2017 the artists performed in Sterzing in South Tyrol and on June 29th and 30th, 2018 on the meadow of the Himmelspforten monastery in Würzburg .

Another festival for songwriters has been taking place at the previous venue since 2017 with Lieder auf Banz .

Moderation of the festival before 1997

From 1987 to 1996 the songs were moderated by Reinhard Mey on a summer evening ; He established the tradition that the moderator (if it is an artist) also contributes his own performances. After 1996, Mey ended his moderation work and his participation for several years because he was unwilling to use his song Be vigilant without the text contained therein “The minister whispers the bishop by the arm: / Hold her stupid, - I'll hold her poor ! ” To sing. In addition to broadcasting the festivals on television ( Bayerischer Rundfunk ) and radio (including WDR , Deutschlandfunk , RAI Südtirol ), some concerts are available on CDs, e. B. 25 years of songs on a summer evening , " 28 years of songs on a summer evening " or 30 years of songs on a summer evening . These three albums each contain a second CD with recordings from previous concerts.

The CD “Songs on a Summer Evening” from 2004 by the no longer existing pläne publishing house contains a foreword by Ado Schlier, but they are studio recordings.
