Gaby Moreno (* 16th December 1981 in Guatemala City , Guatemala as Maria Gabriela Moreno Bonilla ) is a singer , songwriter and guitarist . Gaby Moreno sings her songs, which are influenced by blues , soul and jazz , in English and Spanish. In Latin America she became known to a larger audience in early 2012 through the song Fuiste tú , which Ricardo Arjona recorded with her in 2011. The video of the same name has been viewed more than 810 million times on YouTube (as of February 2020).

Life

From a young age, music played an important role in her life. She sang at family celebrations at the age of two, and since her mother discovered her talent at an early age, she began taking singing lessons at the age of five. Gaby Moreno later sang Disney songs at festivals and at the age of ten she appeared in the opening act for Ricky Martin .

At the age of 14, on a vacation trip to New York, Gaby Moreno heard a previously unknown style of music, the blues. Around the same time, her mother gave her her first guitar as a gift and she began to play songs by Jimi Hendrix on it. In the following years she came through the blues to other styles of music such as jazz, folk or R&B, which can also be found in her songs today in addition to the Latin American influences.

In October 2000 Gaby Moreno moved to Los Angeles to deepen her music education , where she still lives today. She studied music at the Musician's Institute (MI) in Hollywood, where she also met some of her current band members. In 2006 she won the renowned John Lennon Song Writing Contest with the song Escondidos . In 2008 her debut album Still the Unknown appeared , which contains eight English and two Spanish-language titles. A year later, Gaby Moreno sang that of Charlie Chaplin composed song Smile in the documentary The Cove ( The Cove ), directed by Louie Psihoyos , in the category "Best Documentary" with a 2010 Oscar was awarded. These range from soul, folk, blues, rock to bossa nova and tropical music to Latin American influences from their home country Guatemala. On her first two albums Still the Unknown and Illustrated Songs , the songs are sung partly in English and partly in Spanish. Gaby Moreno's style is reminiscent of singers like Norah Jones , Katie Melua or Rickie Lee Jones .
