Ricardo Arjona

Ricardo Arjona (spoken / aɾ'xona /) (actually Edgar Ricardo Arjona Morales ; born January 19, 1964 in Jocotenango , Guatemala ) is a popular Guatemalan singer and former basketball player . He won a Latin Grammy (Best Male Pop Vocal Album 2006) and a US Grammy (Best Latin Pop Album 2007) for his album Adentro . There are also numerous other nominations for both prizes.

Life

Arjona was born in the village of Jocotenango, near Antigua Guatemala . His parents are Ricardo Arjona Moscoso and Noemí Morales de Arjona. At the age of three, he and his family moved to Guatemala City .

After his first musical lessons, he took part in the 1974 “Festival Infantil Juventud 74” competition with a song composed by his father. He initially continued his education in architecture and engineering at the University of San Carlos (USAC), which he later left with a degree in communication studies .

In addition to his musical abilities, Arjona was a talented basketball player, played for Leones de Marte and was active. He toured Central America with the Guatemalan national team and long held the record for a player in Guatemala when he scored over 70 points in one game.

His professional musical career began in 1981 with a contract with PolyGram , for which he released his debut album four years later. Since then he has developed into one of the most successful musicians in Central America, working with influences from Latin pop, rock, Cuban music and Tejano. His lyrics are known for being open about issues such as homosexuality, rape, kidnapping, and immigration. "El Animal Nocturno", as he is nicknamed, has sold more than 20 million records to date. His twelfth album Poquita Ropa, for example, quickly received gold status in Chile, Colombia and Puerto Rico and a platinum award in Mexico.

Arjona took on a small role as an actor in Bandidas in 2006 .

Arjona is the namesake of the USAC library hall and a street in his birthplace.
