The Planche des Belles Filles (German Plank of the beautiful girls ) is a 1,148  m high, wooded mountain in France . It is located in the Vosges in the Haute-Saône department , in the municipality of Plancher-les-Mines ; the border with the Territoire de Belfort runs east of the summit.

Origin of name

Statue made of wood

According to legend, the name of the mountain comes from the time of the Thirty Years War . The girls and young women of Plancher-les Mines fled to the mountains to get away from the cruel Swedish mercenaries. They were overtaken by the Swedes and feared they would be violated and massacred. So they preferred to commit suicide and jumped off a plank into a pond far below. A wooden statue created by a local artist commemorates the legend.

Sports

At the summit is the only winter sports area in the Haute-Saône department. It includes three ski lifts at an altitude of 950 to 1148 meters, which open up four slopes of medium and higher difficulty. Various hiking trails lead to the Ballon d'Alsace as well as to Lepuix , Auxelles-Haut , Giromagny and Plancher-les-Mines. There is also a mountain restaurant.

Cycling

At the beginning of June each year, the Planche des Belles Filles is the destination of Les Trois Ballons , a demanding bike race over 200 kilometers in length.

The summit was also the destination of stages of the Tour de France several times: on July 7, 2012, the 7th stage of the Tour de France 2012 and on July 14, 2014, the 10th stage of the Tour de France 2014 . On July 5, 2017, the summit was the destination of the 5th stage of the Tour de France 2017 . The arrival of the 6th stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place there on July 11, 2019 . On September 19, 2020, the 20th stage of the Tour de France 2020 (individual time trial with the starting point Lure ) is also expected to end at the summit.
