The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2017 took place on July 5th, 2017. It led over 160.5 kilometers from Vittel to the Planche des Belles Filles . There was an intermediate sprint in Faucogney after 102.5 kilometers as well as a mountain classification in the 3rd and 1st category.
Immediately after the start, an escape group of eight formed: Jan Bakelants (ALM), Mickaël Delage (FDJ), Edvald Boasson Hagen (DDD), Philippe Gilbert (QST), Thomas De Gendt (LTS), Thomas Voeckler (DEN), Dylan van Baarle (CDT) and Pierre-Luc Périchon (TFO). Tsgabu Grmay (TBM) tried a few minutes later with a counterattack to reach the escape group, but failed and was caught up again by the peloton. The leading group quickly gained a lead of around 3:40 minutes, which then slowly began to decline due to the teamwork of the BMC Racing Team . A few kilometers before the start of the final ascent, Gilbert attacked from the top group, only Bakelants could follow him. Behind them chased the peloton where Team Sky had taken over the work. After Gilbert and Bakelants were overtaken 4 kilometers from the finish and many drivers had lost touch on the climb, a leading group of several people had formed. a. Simon Yates (ORS), Richie Porte (BMC), Daniel Martin (QST), Nairo Quintana (MOV), Romain Bardet (ALM), Alberto Contador (TSF), Fabio Aru (AST) and Chris Froome (SKY). Fabio Aru attacked 2.3 km from the finish and won the mountain finish as a soloist with 16 seconds ahead of Martin and 20 on Froome and Porte.
Froome took over the yellow jersey from his team-mate Geraint Thomas, who lost 40 seconds in tenth place. Aru took the lead in the mountain classification, Simon Yates the white jersey . Philippe Gilbert was named the most combative driver of the stage. In the points classification for the green jersey, Arnaud Démare (FDJ) remained in the lead. The leading team after the stage was still Team Sky around Chris Froome.
