Jan Bakelants (born February 14, 1986 in Oudenaarde ) is a Belgian cyclist .
Career
In 2008 Bakelants won the overall classification of the Circuit des Ardennes , the U23 event of the classic Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the overall classification of the U23 Nations Cup race Tour de l'Avenir . After he already drove as a trainee for the Professional Continental Team Topsport Vlaanderen at the end of the 2008 season, he received a regular contract there for 2009.
After an interlude at the UCI ProTeam Omega Pharma-Lotto , Bakelandts switched to the RadioShack team for the 2012 season , for which he celebrated his greatest career success by winning the second stage of the Tour de France 2013 , when he later became an outlier with a lead of reached the finish in Ajaccio one second before the peloton . With that he took over the yellow jersey that he wore for two days. In the same year he won the one-day race Grand Prix de Wallonie .
In 2014 Bakelandts won a stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné as a member of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team and switched to Ag2r La Mondiale at the end of the season . He won the semi-classic Giro del Piemonte and Giro dell'Emilia in the year and a stage of the Mediterranean Tour in 2016 .
Before the Tour de France 2017 , Bakelandts responded to an interview question about how he could get through the next three weeks without sexual intercourse, saying that there were still the "podium girls". The management of the Tour de France demanded an apology from him, which Bakelandts made on Twitter.
During the Tour of Lombardy in 2017 , the Bakelandts fell, and then an escort motorcycle ran over one leg. Among other things, he suffered a fractured vertebra.
