Race course

After a few kilometers, six drivers pull away from the field: Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (South Africa / Dimension Data), Mathias Le Tournament (France / Cofidis), Davide Ballerini (Italy / Androni), Pierpaolo De Negri (Italy / Nippo), Lennard Hofstede (Netherlands / Sunweb) and Lorenzo Rota (Italy / Bardiani). As a result, the group got a maximum of 12 minutes ahead.

In the climb to Madonna del Ghisallo , more riders joined the top group with Laurens De Plus (Belgium / Quick Step), Mickaël Chérel (France / AG2R) and Primož Roglič (Slovenia / LottoNL). After the trio caught up to the front, Cherel attacked at the front of the Muro del Sormano and drove on alone. At the end of the descent from the Muro del Sormano , Philippe Gilbert (Belgium / Quick Step), Pello Bilbao (Spain / Astana) and Alessandro De Marchi went to Cherel. The group was caught up to Civiglio .

In the Civiglio there were attacks by Gianni Moscon (Italy / Sky) and Sam Oomen (Netherlands / Sunweb). But the two came away with me. Thibaut Pinot (France / FDJ) then attacked and pulled away. Behind Pinot followed a group with Vincenzo Nibali (Italy / Bahrain-Merida), Domenico Pozzovivo (Italy / AG2R) and Rigoberto Urán (Colombia / Cannondale Drapac). Nibali caught up with Pinot a few kilometers on the descent and drove away from Pinot. Up to San Fermo della Battaglia the group could not catch up with Nibali with Moscon, Oomen, Egan Bernal (Colombia / Androni) and Nairo Quintana , but they caught up with Pinot on the climb. In the last descent, Julian Alaphilippe (France / Quick Step) pulled away from the chasing group and was unable to close the gap to Nibali.

Nibali won the race for the second time after 2015, which, like 2017, led from Bergamo to Como. Alaphilippe followed with about half a minute behind and the two sprinted for third place. Moscon went third.

The triumph of Nibali was overshadowed by a serious fall on the descent from Muro del Sormano , about 35 kilometers from the finish, by several riders. Simone Petilli (Italy / UAE Team Emirates), Jan Bakelants (Belgium / AG2R), Daniel Martinez (Colombia / Wilier Triestina) and De Plus had crashed and had to give up the race and some of them had to be hospitalized. While De Plus and Martinez injured themselves only slightly, Bakelants broke several ribs and lumbar vertebrae and Petilli suffered a concussion, an eye injury and a neck fracture.
