Domenico Pozzovivo (born November 30, 1982 in Policoro ) is an Italian racing cyclist . He is considered a good mountain driver.

Athletic career

Pozzovivo received its first contract with an international cycling team , Pozzovivo received in 2005 with the Professional Continental Team Ceramica Panaria-Navigare . His best place in his first year there was fifth in the one-day race Giro dell'Appennino . His first international elite success came in 2009 on a stage of the Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda .

In the following years Pozzovivo, who moved to the UCI WorldTeam Ag2r La Mondiale in 2013 , was particularly successful in the stage races . He won the Brixia Tour 2010 and the Giro del Trentino 2012 . Pozzovivo also finished in the top ten four times between 2008 and 2014. His best placement was fifth overall in 2014 . In 2012 he finished eighth and won the mountain finish of the eighth stage after a solo attack 6.8 kilometers from the finish. At the Vuelta a España 2013 he was sixth. He broke his leg in 2014 and fell on his face a year later at the 2015 Giro d'Italia . As a result, 2016 did not go as expected for Pozzovivo. He finished sixth in the overall ranking of the Giro d'Italia 2017 and won a stage in the subsequent Tour des Suisse .

In 2018, Pozzovivo joined the Bahrain-Merida team and finished fifth overall at the Giro d'Italia . After he was hit by a car during training in late summer 2019 and suffered a crushed lung in addition to broken bones, he did not receive a contract from the Bahrain team for the following season despite recovering after several operations. At the turn of the year it was announced that he had signed a two-year contract with the South African NTT Pro Cycling Team .

Professional and private

In addition to cycling, Pozzovivo graduated in 2010 with a degree in economics . He expressed an interest in history, politics, technology and known sympathies for the center-left Partito Democratico and the then Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti .
