Monviso Venezia-Il Padania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monviso Venezia-Il Padania (2011: Giro di Padania , German Padania Tour) was a road bike race that was held in 2011 and 2012 in northern Italy as a stage race . The competition was part of the UCI Europe Tour and classified in category 2.1.

Padania is both a geographical concept, the Po Valley called, and on the other hand, describes the region that the separatist party Lega Nord in Italy wanted to get solved. Because of the name Giro di Padania and because there were connections between the organizers of the race and the Lega Nord, when it was first held in 2011, supporters of Italian unity, especially the political left , saw the race as a separatist propaganda event. As a result, there were demonstrations, blockades of the race and, in some cases, attacks against racing cyclists . The originally planned event for 2013 has been canceled.
