route

course

The start of the Giros took place in the Omnisport Apeldoorn .

As in 2002 and 2010 , the Grande Partenza took place in the Netherlands . The start of the first time trial took place within the Velodrom of Apeldoorn , the Omnisport Apeldoorn . The following two flat stages were mainly held in the province of Gelderland , with the second stage in the direction of Nijmegen, almost 40 kilometers from the finish, also passing through the German town of Wyler ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) for a few hundred meters .

On the first day of rest , the transfer took place in the south of Italy to Catanzaro in Calabria . In the further course Italy was first crossed to the north. The destination of the fourth stage was Praia a Mare on the Tyrrhenian Sea , the first mountain arrival was in central Italy at the finish of the sixth stage in Aremogna (near Roccaraso ) in Abruzzo at an altitude of 1572 m. By then, the riders had already started in the lowlands, conquered the Bocca della Selva at an altitude of 1393 m and the subsequent descent to a height of around 500 m. The seventh stage was quite flat, as was most of the eighth stage, where only the short but steep climb of around 500 meters in altitude on the Alpe di Poti made the route difficult. The ninth stage was held as an individual time trial over 40.5 km in the Chianti region .

Palmanova , starting point of the first alpine stage. Two climbs of the first and two climbs of the second category had to be conquered on the 13th stage.
The 15th stage was a mountain time trial from Castelrotto to the Alpe di Siusi at 1,844 m.

After the subsequent second day of rest, the route ran from Tuscany towards the northeast. The eleventh stage began in Modena , on the southern edge of the Po Valley , at the end of the twelfth stage , Bibione , on the Adriatic coast , was reached. At the end of the second week, the queen stage, stage 14, with six classified climbs and the goal in Alta Badia, was on. The route takes you from around 400 m to over 2000 m in the Dolomites , including to Passo Pordoi , Passo di Giau , and Passo di Valparola , before the Mür dl Giat (cat wall), a ramp , just before the finish at the entrance to Stern , with a gradient of up to 19%, had to be conquered. The next day there was a nearly eleven kilometer long mountain time trial to the Alpe di Siusi at 1844 m .

In the third week, Northern Italy was first crossed in a westerly direction. After a mountain stage from Brixen over the Mendel Pass with mountain arrival in Andalo , two transfer stages followed before the final began in the Western Alps . During the 19th stage , the Italian-French border was passed on the climb to the highest point of the Giros, the Colle dell'Agnello ( CC ). With a pass height of 2,744 m, it is the third highest alpine pass . The stage ended after 162 km with an ascent of the 1st category in Risoul . Three climbs in the first category, including the 2,715 m high Col de la Bonette and the Col de la Lombarde , which marks the border with Italy, as well as the final ascent to Vinadio (3rd category) were on the program of the penultimate stage. The 21st and last stage led from Cuneo to Turin . On a 7.5 km long circuit (8 laps) along the banks of the Po , the Giro came to an end after a total of 3,383 km.

Bottom line

Vincenzo Nibali achieved his fourth career success at one of the Grand Tours with the overall victory . It initially fell short of public expectations, but improved in the third week of racing. After Steven Kruijswijk (Netherlands), who had previously been the overall leader, fell on a descent, Nibali won the mountain finish of the 19th stage to Risoul . The next day he attacked the new owner of the Maglia Rosa , the Colombian Esteban Chaves on the penultimate mountain and thereby took over the overall lead. Chaves was then second overall ahead of the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde .

With seven stage wins by André Greipel (3) Marcel Kittel (2), Roger Kluge and Nikias Arndt , Germany became the nation with the most daily successes.

The points classification ( Maglia Rossa ) was won by the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo , the mountain classification ( Maglia Azzurra ) by the Spaniard Mikel Nieve and the junior classification ( Maglia Bianca ) by the Luxembourg Bob Jungels . The team classification according to the time winning team was won by the Kazakh Astana Pro Team .

Michele Scarponi ( Cima Coppi ), Daniel Oss (the intermediate sprint classification Traguardo Volante and the runaway classification), Matteo Trentin (competition prize), Etixx-Quick Step (team classification by points Super Team ) and the Lotto NL-Jumbo team (fair play) won further ratings .

Ratings and rewards

Regulations

The leader of the overall ranking wears the Maglia Rosa . As always in international stage races, the overall ranking results from the addition of the times driven. In addition, there is a time bonus for the stages - apart from the time trial stages 10, 6 and 4 and for the intermediate sprints 3, 2 and 1 seconds. For drivers born after January 1, 1991, the junior ranking is awarded on this basis, the leader of which is awarded the Maglia Bianca .

The leader of the points classification wears the Maglia Rossa . For this evaluation, between 50 and 1 point for the first 15 riders for flat stages, between 25 and 1 point for the first 10 for medium-difficult stages and between 15 and 1 point for the first 10 riders for mountain stages and time trials. In the case of intermediate sprints, between 20 and 1 point are awarded for the first 8 riders on flat stages, between 10 and 1 point for the first 5 riders on medium-difficult stages and between 8 and 1 point for the first 3 riders on mountain stages.

The leader in the mountain classification wears the Maglia Azzurra . Points are awarded on the Cima Coppi between 45 and 1 point for the first 9, on mountains of the 1st category between 35 and 1 point for the first 8, on mountains of the second category between 15 and 1 for the first 6, on ascents of the third category between 7 and 1 point for the first 4 and, if the fourth category climbs, between 3 and 1 points for the first 3 riders.

There are also two team ratings . The Winning Team rating is a rating that results from adding up the times of day of the three best drivers in the team. The Super Team rating results from points awarded for the top positions of the drivers of a team in the stages.

There are also the following special prices:

  • Intermediate sprint scoring : On every stage (except time trial), the first five drivers receive 10, 6, 3, 2 and one point in the intermediate sprints.
  • Outlier evaluation : The winner is the driver who has been active in outlier groups the longest (in a group of a maximum of ten drivers) in the entire race.
  • Most combative driver : At the finish line, the intermediate sprints and every mountain classification, points are awarded for this classification. The number of counters does not correspond to the points otherwise assigned there.
  • Fair play rating : The basis for this rating is a points system in which the aim is to collect as few counters as possible. For example, a fine is converted into one penalty point per 10 Swiss francs, time penalties result in two points per second.
